has anyone tried 17x8 and 17x9 for wheels front and rear?

You can fit x9s in the front and x10s in the rear if you have the right offsets.

I've got SSR comps in 8" fronts and 9" rears with no problems

It's not so much the width of the wheel as it is the width of the tire and the offset of the wheel. Reason for that is, you can run a 7" wheel or a 10" wheel (assuming the tire will fit) and the tire tread (the part that's most in danger of rubbing) will be in the same place relative to the fender.

If you have proper offsets, you can run the width wheel that fits the tire you want to use and you'll be all set.
