how exactly is there a noticeable gearing change if the overall diameter remains almost the same?

17's and 16's will give you a noticible gearing change.....thats the end of that.
No, that's not the end of it. AP1 16" tires will not change the gearing vs. AP2 17" tires.

Care to explain your theory?

you can swap the AP1 and AP2 wheels without drama. The most significant difference being that there are more tires available on the 17' rim. The 17s also have a smaller sidewall resulting in more overall weight but less roll and more precise handling.

the gearing, with proper tire sizes, will not change.

This thread is full of

ap1 had OEM 16'' rims
ap2 had OEM 17'' rims

Honda designed the s2000 with much R&D to fit these two sizes.

You can swap rims no problem at all. Most ap1 owners upgrade to 17'', even 18'' rims all the time. Gears are not affected, your ratios will not change. The only item that may become affected is your speedometer. Sometimes you need to recalibrate for larger diameter rims, but even that is not needed.
