I will soon need to replace my rear tires. I've noticed lately that at speeds of 77-80mph, the car seems to do a little shake. I don't feel it on the steering wheel, I feel it in the cabin: seats shaking and so forth.

Could the rear tires going bald have anything to do with this?

Probably not, as long as the wear is even and the tires are not out of round.

I'd suggest you get the alignment checked AFTER replacing the tires.

It's possible but chances are slim. Do you know if it took a lot of wheel weights to balance the tires? This might indicate a poorly made wheel or a poorly made tire. If it's a badly out of balance tire, then it could go out of balance as it wears. Again, unlikely.
It could also be a coincidence that you may have lost a wheel weight. Since they are bald and are about to be replaced, if the "shakes" go away after you get new tires, then you'll know what it was. If the shakes are still there afterwards, you may have another issue.

Thanks for the responses. xviper, I should mention that I did check to see if any wheel weights were missing. No signs of such. No unusual number of weights either (2-3 weights per wheel).

I'm hoping that the "shakes" are caused by the wearing of the tires. I did hit a huge rock a couple of weeks ago. I't did hit my driveshaft, evident of the scuff marks. I just hope it didn't knock it off balance, causing the shakes. That would be costly, I'm assuming.

We'll find out soon. My tires were ordered today.

It could also be a bent wheel causing the problem. If the shaking started all of a sudden that would be my guess. When the put the new tires on they will be able to tell you.
If I can help let me know.
Thank you

I hope my wheel isn't bent!

I have the original oem tires on and the tread is worn out pretty evenly all the way across. It is of course worn on the insides more so because of neg. camber, but pretty evenly worn on both tires

Hey guys I just got my Yokohama ES 100's installed today (245/45/16). THE SHAKES ARE A THING OF THE PAST!!

I was a little worried there for a while thinking that the shakes were caused by something more serious. Boy am I relieved!

BTW, these are awesome replacements for the S02's.
