Can someone help me understand offsets?
If I use wheels with an offset lower than the ones listed in the FAQ, what will happen? Will they stick out past stock position? If all Im concerned about is avoiding rubbing, what is the smallest offset I can run on an AP1 w/ stock suspension?
Offset that will rub depends on the wheel width. A 10 inch wide rim with +45 offset will stick out more than a 7 inch wide rim with a +40 offset. Offset is the distance from the middle of the rim to the mounting point of the rim. So the closer the offset is to 0, the closer the mounting point is to the middle of the rim.
For example you are trying to calculate what sticks out more: 9 inch wide volk ce29 with +63 offset. (popular setup with conservative offset) or an 8 inch wide rim with a +42 offset. (just an example).
So we take 9/2 = 4.5 inches is half of the rim. 4.5*25.4 = 114.3 (half of the rimwidth in mm). 114.3 - 63(offset) = 51.3mm ( distance from the mounting point to the end of the rim) The higher this number is the more the rim will stick out.
Doing the same math to the 8 inch wheel we get: 8/2*25.4-42 = 59.6.
So the 8 inch rim with 42 offset will stick out 59.6 mm past the mounting point, while the 9 inch rim with 63 offset will stick out 51.3mm past the mounting point.
P.S. What actually rubs is the tire, so don't forget that. Camber, tire size(both width and sidewall) are very important to not rubbing, as well as the width and offset of the rim.
