Effects on performance moving to 18"
I've run 16's, 17's, and 18's on my car. The best combo that I've found has been my 17's. My 18's bogged the car down, made it handle dangerously, and rubbed on the front fenders during hard cornering and braking.
The problem with 18" is:
1. The rear tire diameter is almost always bigger than stock, effectively making your gear ratio taller, not a good thing on an S2000. You can compensate with rear end gears to solve the problem.
2. It is almost impossible to maintain the same front tire width as stock. Most 18" fronts are wider, giving you more steering...more oversteer on an S2000 is not a good thing.
3. Wheel offsets. Almost none of the one-piece 18" wheels have the correct offset for our cars. They usually stick out too far, which causes the tires to rub on the fenders. You can get multi-piece wheels in the correct offsets, but they are heavy and expensive.
4. Weight. Yep, it is your enemy if you care about performance.
The advantage is that they look nice.

I have some CE28Ns on the way and I worry after reading all these posts about problems with 18"s and adding weight, but I'm pretty sure Volks are really light, even in 18"
