Default gouges on inside of wheel

When I go get my tires changed they internal clamp to get the tire off then external clamp with protectors to put the tire on. But the internal clamping leaves marks on the wheel.

Two questions:

1) Is internal clamping the only way to dismount a tire?

2) Does internal clamping always result in gouges on the wheel?

A proper machine should have rubber feet on the "clamps" to NOT leave gouges. The most you should get are black footprints from the rubber that can be rubbed off.
