Thumbs up Hankook or Kumho?

Let's debate...........

I am in the market for new tires for my 17" wheels. The sizing will be AP2 sizes (215/45/17F + 245/40/17R). The Kumho MX and Hankook RS2 are similar in price and I have heard only good reviews on both of them. Nothing matters to me more than great handling and no soft sidewalls. Let me know what you guys think! TIA!

i used to have the mx's i got 20k out of them and they're not worth the money, i mean if they were 80 bucks a tire then i would buy them all day, they are noisy after like 10k miles and they have shitty traction in the rain, my oem tires were alot better in the rain.

You got 20k miles out of MX's? You must not drive aggresively at all! I am not worried about tire life at all. Buying a tire with such low treadwear I would only expect these to last 10k miles or less.

Jim??

I have read on tirerack that the Kumho has a soft sidewall which induces the tire to roll a bit.

This was very apparent in my AVON tires, and I would like to avoid this all together.

Thoughts? I know you don't sell Hankook so hopefully you can give an unbiased opinion.

Thanks

The Hankook's acquitted themselves very well for me at Lime Rock last November. We were actually debating whether or not I might have had a tire advantage versus R-comps in the cold.

No first-hand experience with the MX's, but the couple of guys in my club who used them this year were both very pleased with their on-track performance.

FWIW, a lot of folks criticise the Hankooks for "soft sidewalls", but I thought they were just fine. Not as stiff as DOT-race tires, but I thought they were plenty responsive enough for street tires, I had a blast on them.

I don't even believe these are in the same class

Even though treadwear rating is not an indication of tire performance as each manufacturer's TWR is different, I still don't think the HTRIII is on par for what I am looking for.

I want something as near to R compound as possible with a very stiff sidewall. Correct me if I am wrong but I don't believe the HTRIII falls into this category.

The RT615, RS212, and MX fall into my category. The only reason I am not getting the RT615 is they do not make a 245/40/17, yet they make a 255 which is too wide of a contact patch for my use.

Thank you for that info. I am definitely not looking for a spongy sidewall. I may be leaning towards the MX the more I read about them.
