Help for what? If you're not tracking your car, the difference will be insignificant.

A lot of people do this, I can't for the life of me figure out why.

You'll never ever notice the ~1 - 1.5% weight reduction on the street, and even the stopwatch would be hard-pressed to notice it at the track or autoX, even if you're inhumanly consistent.

Dumb idea IMO.

Weight reduction is weight reduction, although not so significant now. If one continues to remove weight it will add up. For instance all the shit in the trunk adds up to 8 pounds, and the spare tire weighs in at about 20 pounds.

Are you guys joking? When I took the spare wheel out, the jack and broke it off with the girlfriend for a skinnier, happier one I noticed a HUGE difference

We used to do that at autocross and track events in our M3's but that was only because they were full size spares and weighed over 50#, once we removed that, the rear seat bottom, the jack and tools from the trunk we were close to 100# lighter than before.
I only recommend people taking stuff like this out for performance if you can take 100# off the weight of the car and are on and after market suspension that will allow for proper corner balancing after you are done otherwise its not significant enough to do anything with. The old racers used to say that every 100# of weight was a tenth on the quarter
