so yesterday I decided to see the weight difference between ap1 and ap2 v1 wheel with tire installed. They were the rear wheels and they both had hankook evo tires installed. To my suprise they both weigh the same which was 43 lbs. I am very dissappointed because I thought for sure that the ap1 wheels weigh less. The ap2 v1 wheel had 255/40/17 and the ap1 wheel 225/50/16.

 

AP1 wheel has less weight, but more side wall on the tire... taller sidewalls require more reinforcing to maintain rigidity thus it is ofter the combination of sidewall and overall diameter that affect tire weight, since the diameter is the same (roughly) the extra sidewall makes the tire heavier...

 

Weigh the wheels alone if you want to compare wheel weight (otherwise you're obviously comparing wheel + rubber weight which isn't the same thing). As stated above, with any two tires and wheels with roughly the same outer diameter you have more rubber on a smaller wheel. Rubber isn't weightless.

You can do the math to calculate sidewall height:
255 * 0.40 = 102
225 * 0.50 = 112.5

 

Neither is air.

255/40-17 = 25 lb.

AP1 16x7.5 = 18.6 lb.
AP2V1 17x8.5 = 20.5 lb.

Brand new 225/50-16 on AP1 rear should be 42.6 lb (close enough to 43 lb)
Brand new 255/40-17 on AP2V1 rear should be 45.5 lb (tires worn down? missing chunks of tread? half the wheel spokes machined out for weight savings? it is a mystery...)

 

While this may be true, it is highly unlikely that any reinforced sidewall will weight as much as the "sidewall" made out of alloy on the larger wheel.

More likely the AP2 wheels are the same weight even given the larger diameter, either due to a lighter alloy/different construction (forged vs. cast, etc.).

 

must b the air u put in. if u put in more air into the ap1's then it'll weigh more. lol. the OP is correct. the tires make the weight difference. i worked @ a bmw dealer and wheels on any M car r light until u weigh with tire installed. oh and the run-flat tires r the heaviest!
