Default My experience with Yokohama Advan A048's

I went for new tires a couple weeks ago. I wanted to go with something that not many people have tried. I decided on the Advan A048's medium compound. I have driven an Elise with the same tires and I loved it. I have to say, I have never used a better or stickier tire. Not only does it grip extremely well (especially when up to operating temps), it gives very progressively. You can literally feel the tires start to slip slightly and let off the gas before they give. With a good set of coilovers and A048's, an Elise is the only thing I've ever driven that will outhandle my setup. So far, they've only seen "extremely spirited" street use. I will post my review for a road course as soon as I can get on one. The only downfall is the price and treadwear rating. $1,046.15 for 4 tires mounted and balanced on stock AP1 rims and a treadwear rating of 60. I'd hate to see what they cost for an 18x8, 18x9 setup.

Yes, but IMO tires are the single most important part of a car like the S2000. You can have the best suspension and brakes on the planet, but if you have cheap/crappy tires the car won't handle. However, if you have just stock suspension and brakes, tires can make a HUGE difference in how the car handles. Also, in a drag racing situation, you can have double the HP of the car next to you, but if you can't hook up, you're going to lose. I might not run these tires for the rest of the time I have my car, but I'm definitely glad I got to try them. They bring out the true potential of the S2000 in the corners.

The Neova is one of the best out there right now. It is as close to a track tire as you can get for the street.

Yes, I'm running the A048 which is an R-compound track tire. Not really meant for street driving, especially in the rain. It grips well on damp roads, but standing water is a nightmare.

The A048 are probably more or less equivalent to RA1's as far as grip and treadwear. My experience with RA1's, if you run on the street is around 7000 street miles, 50 autocross runs and a couple of track days.

*Update*

I have now put 1,000 miles on these tires. The rears have 85% tread remaining. However, this is nothing unusual for an r-comp with a treadwear rating of 60. The fronts still have 95+% tread left. I have raced the car in the 1/4 mile and also had some fun on the freeway with it. 2 nights ago, I took a sweeping curve on the freeway at 130mph. The car just stayed planted, the tires never came close to their grip limit. You REALLY have to throw the car into a corner to even get a chirp out of the tires. The more corners I take with these tires, the more impressed I become. Also, from what my friends with Evos have told me, these tires will stay sticky until the very end. You can drive on these until the tread is completely gone and they will still perform well. I'll post another update at 2k miles.

Very nice review! I plan on picking up a set of these for my wife's Civic within the next month or so. I've heard nothing but good things about these tires thus far.
