Default Need help with Volk offsets

http://rayswheels.co.jp/cgi-bin/cgi/matchi...ONA&inchIndex=1

This info is posted on the Volk website and is for the Volk Daytona wheel:

S-2000 1875 +48 215/40 R18* 1880 +45 225/40 R18*

The * next to the R18 points to a footnote at the bottom of the webpage. Unfortuately, it's in Japanese and I can't read it. I'm wondering if anyone knows what issues; if any, I would run into if I went this route for my wheels. I've done a little homework on offsets, but I'm still shakey on what is recommended, what you can get away with, and what will just plain not work. I do know a fellow S2K owner with the following wheel and tire setup. The owner told me that he hasn't had any issues:

VOLK RACING GT-N GUNMETAL 18X7.5 +49,18X8 +49
TOYO PROXES T1-S F/225 40 18 R/255 35 18

I've visited the library that contains the following info:

Front:

16x6.5 = +55mm (e.g. stock) [minimum of +50mm]
17x7.5 = +52mm (e.g. Mugen MF10)
18x7.5 = +50mm [minimum of +48mm]
18x7 = +48mm
18x8 = +53mm (e.g. WORK MEISTER S2R)

Rear:

16x7.5 = +65mm (e.g. stock) [minimum of +60mm]
17x8.5 = +59mm (e.g. Mugen MF10)
18x8.5 = +55mm [minium of +50mm]
18x9 = +60mm (e.g. WORK MEISTER S2R)
18x9.5 = +65mm

It goes on to say that if I don't plan on lowering the car, that the offsets can be a little less. But...how much less? I've had my car for about 3 months now and the wheels will be my first "upgrade". Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

FaithBySpeed,

Hello, I wrote the offset information in the library.

Fist off...I want to recommend higher offset for the 18x9 and 18x9.5.
Now, I feel it should be...

18x9 +65mm
18x9.5 +70mm

I for one...would not go with the below setup...
S-2000 1875 +48 215/40 R18* 1880 +45 225/40 R18*
First of all, the rear offset is too low. 2nd of all, you want to run at least 8.5 inches in the rear...because the minimum approved rim width for 255/35/18 is 8.5 inches. 3rd...you don't want to run 225/40/18 in rear...it's too narrow of a tire.

I don't know about the below setup...255/35/18 is recomended to be mounted on a minimal wheel width of 8.5 inches.
VOLK RACING GT-N GUNMETAL 18X7.5 +49,18X8 +49
TOYO PROXES T1-S F/225 40 18 R/255 35 18

If you don't lower the car, I would still recommend high offsets. Get as close to +55mm front and +65mm rear (you may need higher offset for super wide wheels). You don't want the wheel to look like it is sticking out the fender. Say like you get 18x8.5 in rear and don't lower the car...I would still recommend getting no less than +50mm in rear.

For example...a great setup would be the CE28N's...
18x7.5 +50mm
18x9 +63mm

Post what wheel and tire combo you are looking at, and I will give you my input about the setup.

My rear TE37 is 18x8.5 +48mm, 255/35/18 T1-S...and I am lowered. My offset in rear really should be +55mm.
If my car was lowered any more than this...I would probably rub:

I don't think that Volk makes the Daytona in a size and offset that I would be comfortable with on my car. I have looked at the TE37s. The sizes they recommended are

1875 +48 215/40 R18 1885 +50 225/40 R18

http://rayswheels.co.jp/cgi-bin/cgi/matchi...?modelName=TE37

The offsets seem to be pretty good. How about the tire sizes?

Thanks for you help Phantom. I've learned a few things from you in some other forums also.

FaithBySpeed,

No problem bud...post or pm me on any wheel tire combo you are considering...glad to help out.

18x7.5 +48
18x8.5 +50

This is the exact setup I am running. Except I am using 225/40/18 and 255/35/18 Toyo T1-S. I really recommend higher offset than this if you plan to lower your car alot. I mean, +50mm is the bare minimum I would run on a 18x8.5 wheel. +55mm to +60mm would be better.

But, if you plan to just lower a bit down the line...preferably with coil overs...these wheels will be fine.

Potential problem I have with the wheels is the low offset. You see...the Toyo T1-S 255/35/18 does not have all that big of a tread width...I estimate it to be about 8.4 inches. Now, I have been looking to buy some Yokohama ES100's next for the rear...the specs on the Yokohama site says that 255/35/18 has a 9.8 inch tread width. I do have a tight 2 finger gap between the top of the tire and the top of the fender...but I am a little concerned that I may rub on a hard turn.

There are some persons that put a 1 finger gap with these wheels and run some tires that are a bit skinnier.

215/40/18
245/35/18

This size works well with the wheels...especially because the overall diameter matches the stock 24.8 inch exactly. The problem is that not alot of tire manufacturers make these sizes. I know T1-S comes in 245/35/18 and the Parada's come in 215/40/18, and Falken GRB's make both sizes...but your tire selection is small.

Correction:

I don't know if the Volk CE28N's come in 18's for our car.
Above...I meant to write...

17x7.5 +50mm
17x9 +63mm

Are you considering 17's for the S2000?
I favor 17's for the s2000...
- the ride quality is better.
- tires are cheaper.
- tire selection is more plentiful.

I've started looking harder at the CE28s in a 17" size. If I ran the CE28s in a 17x7.5+50 and 17x9+63 setup, what would be the ideal tire selection?

CE28N's eh? Good choice.

Regarding the tire size...I would go:

225/45/17
255/40/17

The below size will work also...skinnier tire, but lower profile.

215/45/17
245/40/17

Phantom,

I've ordered these:

Volk Racing GTC
Front: 18x7.5 +50 Type 1
Rear: 18x8 +43 Type 2

What size tire would you go with this setup?

I'm not the expert, but isn't the rear offset too low? What's your take on this setup Phantom?

Well I'm no expert either, nor am I Phantom, but I think he'll be ok. From my calculations the rear wheel will stick out 28.35mm more than stock[(8in-7.5in)/2*25.4mm + 65mm-43mm]. While this is probably less than ideal, its not too different than some other aftermarket wheels. For instance it is only 2mm more than the rear wheel of the Spoon/Regamaster setup. I think from what he posted Phantoms rear wheels (18x8.5 +48) would stick out 29.7mm more than stock. So this setup should fall between the Spoon/Regamaster and Phantom's wheels. What this doesn't take into account is the treadwidth for the particular tires or if the car will be lowered. If I am in error in my calculations someone feel free to correct me.
