One of the things I often check with my autocross tires is their build date. With my most recent set of four, bought simultaneously, the build dates were over a year apart

The tire mfg's list anything going back 3 years from date of mfg as new. As long as they are stored in the warehouse you do not get the deterioration that you would get with the tires on the car. We turn out inventory at lot more often than a local tire store would.

I agree. I received my tires from Tire Rack and the build dates were 18 week of this year.

Just buy the newest, best tire out. You guarantee no shelf life.
