Default Nitrogen in my tires?

I was approached at a local tire shop where the salesmen said I should replace the air in my tires with Nitrogen for $10 a tire. He claimed I would get better gas mileage, a smoother ride, and better performance. He was eager to sell it, so I said I would think about it. Do a lot of you use Nitrogen?

Air works just fine for me.

Nitrogen doesn't leak out as easily as regular air. Nitrogen stays more consistent with temperature variations. This means your pressures will stay more consistent. The end result = better gas mileage.

I call BS on "smoother ride".

I'm not tracking my car, so I'd rather spend my $40 on something else.

Don't quote me on this, it was just what I was told while I was in Japan, the use of nitrogen will not corrode the inside of the wheel. Not that you will see the inside of the wheel anyways.

Definitely doesn't lose pressure or not as easily as regular air. My car sat in an impound lot for 4.5 months, when I finally got it out, my air pressure was what it was when I first had the tires filled with the nitrogen many months back before going in.

Nitrogen is a larger molecule than oxygen so it dosnt soak through the tire as fast. 1. Low tire pressure hurts gas mileage. Its density is also less affected by heat. With regular air (80% nitrogen 20% oxygen) density fluctuates withe temperature, the hotter the tire the higher the pressre. 2. High tire pressure gives a rougher ride. With 99.9% nitrogen, the pressure stays the same. 3. This also reduces risk of blowout. Nitrogen is hugely used in the racing industry for these reasons. I use nitrogen in my car, but i get it for free at my work. I can't say it is worth $50 for me but its only a one time purchase because the shop you bought it at will most likely top you off for free when you need it.

P.S. 4th reason. Have you ever needed to change to your spare and find it flat? Well it happened to me. This dosnt happen with nitrogen.

$40 seems like a rip off.

The machines they use can fill a tire for about $.25 each...

get a buddy who does hvac and see if he has any nitrogen on his service truck, give him a 12 pack and have him fill with his regulator through his gauges

All of the points are valid above but 10.00 per tires is steep.

those nitrogen systems just filter out the nitrogen from a normal compressor. the system is about $15000 but the nitrogen is free for shop
