Default offset and handling, gurus needed

Hi all,

im currently running 18" wheels but id like to get some lighter 17" ce28s. my guards are all rolled and my rear bumper has been trimmed, so i am able to fit some quite aggressive offset (rear wheels atm are 18 x 9 + 42, fronts are 18 x 7.5 +45).

the wheels im looking at are 17 x 7.5 +43 front and 17 x 8.5 +40 rears.

Question is how will running lower than stock offsets affect handling? are there any adverse effects?

by running lower offset wheels, arnt i effectively widening the track of the car, and by doing so would this improve handling around corners?

i have heard running lower offset does put more strain on wheel bearings however.

What are you opinions on this?

Also the tires i plan on running are 225/45/r17 fronts and 245/40/r17 rears (if that makes a different)

thanks guys

John

Increase in track is on the order of 2%. Not likely that you'd even notice a difference with a stopwatch at the track, unless you're very very consistent...

Personally I'd never consider 225/45-17 fronts with 245/40-17 rears. The fronts will look much bigger (bigger OD, more bulge) than the rears. Yeck.

You should be able to run 255/40-17's in back with some camber, considering your fenders are rolled.

Running a lower offset is going to widen the track of the car and it is not a bad idea. We have a lot of track and auto cross guys here that run spacers to acheive the same thing. For the tires I also like the 255/40R17 if you can fit them on the rear with the 225/45R17. Otherwise I would look at the 215/45R17 and 245/40R17.
If I can help let me know.

oh cool i believe in a 17" rim i will be able to fit 255 no problems. im getting some coilovers fitted and will be raising my ride height a little so i think a 255/45/17 wheel will be no probs (car is currently quite low)

is 225/45/17 good for the fronts?

from what ive read on other forums (posted this same thread in about 5 forums lol) the increased track puts increased wear on the hub assembly (makes sense). also some people have said it increases tramlining. as my car is still a streeter i dont want to be replacing bearings all that often.

I recently made a purchase on a set of 17x7.5+45 & 17x8.5+50 rims with 215/45 & 245/40 tires and i was wondering if the stock alignment setup would be recommended. I'm still running on stock suspensions, and how will it fit if i want to go 255/40 for the rear in the future?

ok so ive decided on a rim design and color that i want. in specific they are the CE28ns in the formula silver + diamond cut rim. however these only come in specific sizes as per below:

17 x 7.5 +43...................or.................17 x 7.5 +50
17 x 9....+40.......................................17 x 9....+63

my preference is the set on the left, and would like to run 225/45f and 255/40r tyres (seems to be a better choice for the rears).

which set would you buy? implications of running the set on the left? the set on the right is a very safe offset for the s2000 and similar in spec to the oem wheels.

both front and rear guards are rolled, and my rear bumpers are already trimmed. im looking for good handling and balance, while maintaining reasonable tyre wear (as well as bearing/hub) and traction. Car is setup for mountain driving rather than track so will ride slightly higher, probably 1.5-2cm of clearance above the tyres.

ok finally decided on a setup im going to try out. after seeing the ap2s run 7" f and 8.5" rears stock i decided on the following

5x114.3

2 x 17 x 8jj +44
2 x 17 x 9.5jj +47

offset is not too aggressive, however will still be easy to sell later on if i decide to run higher offsets.

fitted my stock wheels today and boy does the car drive different. i actually prefer the lower offset wheels im currently running in 18"

the stockies make the cars handling very twitchy, though i can feel an improvement in acceleration due to the lighter weight, the cars handling is a bit un-nerving atm when driving on the limit.
