Potenza RE-71R proper AP1 sizes
nothing wrong with a 225 for an ap1, compare the tread width numbers for additional information to use as a comparison. My 225 So-2's are really wide, comparable to many 245's in tread width and you can see the difference. I have Re-11a's on the fronts and they also have a really wide tread width compared to other tires of the same profile.
You may be able to get the wonderful RE-11A still in AP1 sizes. Perhaps at a discount. I have 'em on my AP2 and love 'em but will probably have to get the RE-71R to replace them next summer.
I've seen AP2 wheels for several times this summer. Any need to keep your car box stock? My "research" indicates the wider 17" wheels are a performance improvement.

In a 245/45/16, for street use, Bridgestone RE-11. Also plenty capable of running on the track or autocross should you do that. However, they will be pretty pinched I think on rear AP1's. Then maybe go 225/50/16 up front (also pinched). Noticed that means the fronts will be 0.2" larger in diameter though.
Should you decide to go to 17", you will have additional options and could run the 215/245 or 225/255 stagger in a larger variety of tires including the new RE71R.
