R comps
Jim,
I looked at the site and couldn't find any R comps in a 255 square size.
NT-01, R6, A6 as a start, but open to any suggestions
Does tirerack carry them? If not, where do you recommend I look?
I am looking to get some TR1 wheels and would like to get the tires all at once to have them delivered ready to go.

NT01 come in 255/40R17 but tirerack doesn't carry them. Tirerack does carry the Toyo RA1 and R888 in that size though. In this category is also the Hankook Ventus TD and Maxxis RC-1 which tirerack do not carry.
Hoosier R6, A6 are in a completely different category than the tires mentioned above and only come in 225/45R17 and 245/40R17 but run super wide. In this same category is also the BFG R1 which does come in a 255. Other full blown R comps to look at is the kumho v710 and Hankook Z214 both in a 245/40.
Not sure what your skill level is but if you're semi new to track or autox you should stay away from R comps because they will mask your mistakes more than street tires. Also, some of the more aggressive category of R compounds (40ish UTQG) are known to be more of a velcro like tire in the way they break loose (tons of grip and then nothing when you push a little bit too far)

Hard to beat the good old trusty RA1's. If you actually want to drive on the street as well, these are probably the better choice due to their wet weather tread design. Shave them down typically for purely dry track use otherwise.
Aside from the fact that they cost less I would go with nt01. I have yet to hear someone prefer r888 over the nt01. Or if you want all out speed the new Hankook TD are looking pretty unbeatable. Just my .02

Great responses.
Just some background. Been doing DE Advanced/Red, and looking to instruct in 2013 sometime.
So good experience.
I think the RA1 or NT01 will be a good "starter" tire based on the discussion, I currently run RS3, so there will not be a huge difference I wouldn't imagine. Looks as though I need to consider the R888 as an option also.
Eventually I would look to get to the Hoosiers, but that seems like a big first step.
If there is a "best" place to buy the RA1, NT01, or R888, please chime in and let me know your preferences.
