Default RE050s in the cold

Well, this morning it is so cold here (about 8 degrees F) that my CRX beater won't even start (almost, but the battery gave out before the engine caught). I have a meeting in about an hour and my new S2000 is sitting there happily in the garage and it almost certainly would start...

Conditions here are dry and all of the ice/snow is gone from the streets but as I said its rather cold. So the question is: just how bad would it be to try to drive on my RE50s in these conditions? Are we talking 'dangerous', or would I just have less grip and should be OK if I don't get wild? I only need to do a couple of miles of city-type driving.

Drive around the block a few times and check it out.

Take it VERY easy. I took mine out last Sunday, just to relieve some frustration , and I slid on some salt/dirt that they cleared the snow with. Plus, in frigid temps, summer tires will freeze up and will be like rolling around on blocks of ice.

Just be careful, and you should be ok.

Yeah if its just cold- you'll be fine as long as you're not abrupt on the throttle. But watch out for any hidden patches of ice, snow, or salt.

OK, thanks all. My CRX started right up when I tried it again later so I ended up driving that and my S2000 is still un-salted for now. I am still on the fence about winter tires, for a variety of reasons including that I often have one or two other cars available. If I sell one (I have a potential buyer for the CRX) then I probably will get tires. Hopefully Tire Rack will still have some for me then!

The problem with driving onthe summer performance tires is you can not control what other people do. A performance tire on a clear dry day at 32 degrees you would loose at least 25% traction for braking and steering.
