Default replace 1, 2 or upgrade...help

I've just had that unfortunate circumstance of picking up a nail in the last 1/2 inch of tread before the sidewall in my left rear.

Obviously this is not a patch/plug spot.

My rears have 6,500mi and are at 6-7/32 of tread left (baseline being 10/32).

I have a local tire shop more than willing to match tire rack's price.

Do I:
1. replace only the left rear?
2. replace both rears?
3. go with s-02's?
4. go with s-03's?
5. stick with standard size 225/50-16 (my usual driving is hard but not nutz)?

HELP!!! I need my baby back---soon.

p.s. tirerack guys, what is the advantage of going with you over my local store?

I would say with that tread depth you should replace the 2 rear tires and stay with the OE tires. If you replace one tire with that much tread depth it will probably mees up the anti lock brakes.
If you are going to go with the S03 i would say to go with all four tires. Make sure the local tire store gets you the OE tire and not the S02 Pole Position.
If I can help let me know.
Thank you

Keep us informed. I for one am curious about your experience with your local tire shop getting OE s02 tires as well as rear replacement only.

Thanks, Eric

6/32 is not much on a fast wearing tire. I'd get both and enjoy the benefits of new.

well, remeasured treadwear, and i must be loafing: the right rear is at 7-8/32.
therefore i went ahead and ordered just one tire (unfortunately everyones response came late friday and i wanted to get my order in early for probable mon. delivery).

the local shop was very aware of the difference in the OE and "regular" s02's, and felt this would not be an issue from their supplier.

I have been convinced that when it comes time to replace all 4 - s03's will be the way to go, and i probably should have just ordered from tire rack...

...hopefully this won't be one of those expensive lessons we all learn in life from time to time.

thanks for the help.

rear tire mounted on tuesday (ordered friday)....with taxes final cost was very similar to prospective cost from tire rack.

if had to do it again...?...would probably have gone with tire rack just for comfort in knowing what they are talking about and not be sold on "matching price" alone.

the real answer will come after some hard miles on the new left rear.

good luck to the rest of you.
