Default Rim width to sidewall question

I recently picked up another set of wheels that are going to require some fender work. I'm planning to go beyond a pull and do something more along the lines of what Diez did on his car.

I ordered 17x9 +45s for the back and plan on running a 255 tire back there. I also ordered a 17x8.5 +45 front. In order to keep the sidewalls fairly square on both of those wheels, what size tire should I run up front? 235 or 245? If I can run a 245 up there, I'll just mount the OEM bridgestones I have up there and order 2 more in a 255 size for the rears.

Any thoughts?

235s should be good, but you can't go wrong with either of them....especially since you are planning to do extensive fender work.

8.5" width with 245 would be like rear OEM AP2 wheels. The OEM Bridgestones are pretty square on them imho. 245's ftw!

i'd go with a 235/255 set-up....also do you plan on running RE050's again or did you plan on going with a different tire i the future?

I like the RE050s. I might try to stick with them. I've got Continental ContiSport 3s on the HREs and I'm happy with them on a wheel like a big HRE, but if I'm going to run something smaller like this, I'll want something a bit more aggressive.

If I run a 235 on the front, what profile should I be looking at, 40? That would be a little bit taller than the stock stuff I think. I'm leaning to a 255/235 combo right now, but am still thinking about 255/245.

So...

235/?/17 front
245/40/17 rear

Fill in the "?". I really like the RE050s, but they're not offered in a 235/40. I think a 235/45 is too tall. Any thoughts?

Here, I was going to PM this to Jim, but I guess he's not set up to receive PMs. This was the PM though... I hope Jim can answer, but I'll take anybody's advice.

Hey Jim, I hope you have time to read this.

I recently picked up some new wheels and now I'm tire shopping. I've been through a few sets of OE RE050s and I really like them. However, I'm hoping to run a 245/235 or 255/235 combo this time around. I believe the proper size would be a 235/40/17, but the RE050s aren't offered in that size, only a 235/45/17 which I think would be too tall to run with a 245/40/17 rear (OE size).

Do you have any input on this? I want to keep the diameter as close to stock as I can and if I have to err to one side, I'd prefer to have just a smidge too much tire, than too little. My big worry is the front and rear side walls matching though.

The rims in question are a 8.5/9" combo and I'm worried about a 225 front looking a bit too "stretched" for my liking. One size wider tire on a 1.5" wider wheel just seems like it would be a hell of a stretch.

Why didn't you order 17x9 +45 all around?

Because I want to run a little bit of stagger, but I want my sidewalls to look about the same front and rear. If I ran 17x9 all the way around with staggered tires, my fronts would be more stretched than the backs.

245/255 is hardly any stagger.
