Default Snow Tire Size?

Hi all,

It is slowly getting to be the time of year to start thinking about it, and this will be my first winter with the S2000. Please save the "get a winter beater" comments. I don't have room for another car. Because of my job, I don't drive very much, usually once a week to/from the airport. A 2nd car is just not practical.

So my question is, which size to get? Generally, skinnier is better, but I will be running these on my factory AP1 wheels. Do people mostly run OEM tire size, or do you go narrower? I was thinking of running 205/55/16 on all 4 corners.

I'm planning on running General Altimax Arctics, as I've had nothing but amazing experiences with them in the past.

Anybody have any suggestions?

Thanks.

I put winter tires on my AP2 using AP1 wheels with stock AP1 sizes. Yes, skinnier is better when you're talking about actually driving in snow, but I wasn't willing to sacrifice more dry grip with a skinnier tire. Winters where you are are probably much worse than here but are you ever going to truly drive in a blizzard with 6+ inches of snow?

The tires worked well for me last year in the cold temps even though it didn't snow ONCE! I would suggest stock AP1 sizes. I'm sure others with chime in as well. Good luck!

Well if years past is any indication, there will be times (albeit few and far between) that I will actually be driving during a moderate dumping of snow. Only to/from the airport.

Agreed about dry traction. The majority of driving is just on plowed/wet/slushy roads anyway. Very rarely is the road 100% snow covered.

Well after some searching, it appears that the General doesn't come in OEM AP1 sizes. 225/50/16 for the rear isn't listed. Same story for nearly every snow tire I search for. Only one I found is the Federal Himalaya WS2. Guess that is the winner.

What websites are you looking at? I think mine are Hankooks. I know Dunlop wintersports M3 or something like that come in AP1 sizes.

EDIT: Also, don't be afraid to mix the fronts and rears. I usually stay with the same manufacturer tho. Check discount tire direct for AP1 sizes

EDIT again lol: Just did a few quick searches. The 225 is going to be a problem

I am in Metro D and I have a set of 1 season old Blizzaks with AP1 wheels painted black if you are interested. I do not remember the exact size, but I can double check tonight if your interested.

That's ok. I've already got wheels, just gotta find some tires. Thanks for the offer though.

On my WRX I had Dunlop Graspic snow tires. Those will come in just about any size you would want and they are cheap. I would suggest going up one profile size as the sidewalls are pretty soft and you'll want as much ground clearance as you can get, as long as your fenders will alloy it.

The Firestone Winterforce comes in the 205/55R16 and 225/50R16 sizes. The 205/55R16 all the way around will give you the best winter traction in the snow. YOu will give up some performance in the dry but it is winter and I don't see any issues with the 205/55R16 all the way around. If I can help let me know.
