I've been running different rears than the fronts for the last 10,000 miles with no problems. While I agree it's best to have 4 matched tires, for daily driving, it won't kill ya to put on different rears.

It is not necessary to change all 4 tires. I've been running on "mis-matched" front-rear tires for close to 20000 miles now with no problems. One of the non-OEM sets of rear tires I had were 245/45 SO-3's. There was very little noticeable difference in the balance of the car. However, with 225's I imagine it'd be scary...the OEM rear tires were even wider than the 245's I had. I'll note that while the SO-3's did have much better hydroplane resistance than the stock tires, they wore out even faster.

Anyway, the short answer is that if your tire selection is right, you won't have any problems running different tires on the front and rear, so there's no point in throwing away two perfectly good front tires.

That was your second mistake. You should have increased tire pressure in the rear or reduce the fronts to minimize oversteer.

I snapped a couple pics of 245/45/16 SO3's and 225/50/16 SO3's.
