Default spacers on stock AP2

Is it possible to make the AP2 rims apear more flush with the use of spacers? would they be way too thick? Also how do spacers effect the handling of a car?

Park next to a previous generation Mustang GT, that'll make the S2000 wheels look more flush.

Spacers will push the wheels out toward the fender and they will improve performance some by widening the track. What I would recommend would be to run 225/45R17 front and 255/40R17 rear to do the same thing without spacers.
