Default Tire sizes

Hey all, I just purchased a 2001 s2k that is pretty much bone stock. I have done quite a bit of reading lately and I'm still a little foggy when it comes to the correct tire size to get. I have stock wheels, and I'm looking to get a new set of tires. I would like to keep my price for each tire around $100. I'm looking for a tire with good wear and traction ratings. I'm wondering what is the widest tire size I can get for the front and rear, without any problems. (stock suspension)

And sorry if this has been posted a billion times before.

Thanks.

-Eric

Stock sizes (205/55-16, 225/50-16) are imo the most "correct" sizes for stock wheels (16x6.5 F, 16x7.5 R), though the sticky and about a million S2ki'ers will tell you otherwise. Other options:

205/55-16, 245/45-16
205/50-16, 245/45-16 (what I'm running, albeit on 16x7 F, 16x8 R wheels)
225/50-16, 245/45-16 (what I have at the moment for track tires on the stock wheels)

There are some who run even wider tires front and rear for AutoX/Time Attack.

The rim width is really your limiting factor on the stock rims- 225f and 245r is really about as wide a tire as any manufacturer will say is an 'approved' fitment for the OEM wheel widths. The most common upsize is to go to a set of 17" wheels in 17x7.5"f, 17x9"r which obviously allows a much wider set of tires (as high as 245f 275r), but also has a much greater selection of good brands. Take a look at the khumo's in 16" for decently grippy, bargain priced tires.
There is a sticky at the top of this forum with TONS of good info on wheels and tires for the S2K, without having to wade through mounains of serch results.

Cheers,
Mike
