Everything I read has said they are fastest on the first lap and then get too hot. Except for the secret sauce tire which is the same compound through the entire tire. 235 40 17 and miata size 195 50 15 or something like that. Then that tire doesn't last at all

If you are from Canada and tracking in Canada with ambient temps in the 50-70's, maybe you could run R1R's for two laps but after that, they will melt away. I'd suggest looking into RS3's first since I know it still can get warm up there during the times of the year you would be tracking.

On the road they are pretty good even in the wet (except if you don't have enough thread left on ) and during track days as the other guys said you must pay attention to their temperatures.
Additionally, on the road I felt that they require a bit of warming up before you can use their full potential and not to damage the shoulder of the tyre.
Durability wise, the rear ones lasted aprox 15000km - 9320miles (not daily driven and with 4 track days). The front ones had plenty of thread left but the last year became full of cracks.(had them on for 4 years up to now).
Now a the rear I'm running RS3's and I feel that they perform slightly better than the R1R's or at least they are defiantly 'ready to go' faster if you know what i mean

Old tire, old compounds. There's better out there for similar money. Second gen RS3, Direzza ZII, RE-11A, AD-08R, even the BFG Rival...
