Volk Flat Caps

See how the lug nuts don't stick out like yours? They're the same rays lug nuts too.

Or I just have larger nuts
Seriously though, I'm curious as to why the flat caps don't work just for posterity's sake (I've already ordered a set of high type caps).
Either my wheels are "special", they've been modified, or my hub/axle/nut just sticks out further than normal.
The wheels are an older set (2002) so they could be "special", or have more concavity.
I didn't buy them new, so a previous owner could have modified them (will check the mounting surface when I change tires soon).
I can live with those 2 possibilities.
But the possibility that something is abnormal about my hub/axle/nut does worry me. FWIW, both left and right sides are the same, so any abnormality is symmetrical.
Any thoughts on what would make my axle/hub/nut stick out so far? From the pictures it looks like the axle nut has been retorqued tighter (restaked), and it's not the actual nut that sticks out the most, it's the thing(hub/axle?) that the nut screws onto.
