Wheel width disadvantage, by how much?
17x8.5 vs 17x9 How much of a disadvantage is there in an autocrossing sense?
I can't use as big of tires with the same steering response. What else is there?

Are you planning to compete in autocross or just have fun and learn? There are certain rules one must follow, and usually either a 245 or 255 tire is max width. Also, in autocross, it is probably better having a lighter, narrower wheel, like a high offset 8.5. This is why a decent amount of competition autocrossers like the OZ Racing 17x8.5 +59 wheel. Also, in autocross, a 245 vs 255 probably doesn't make much difference...a 245 in a better tire compound will be better than a 255 in a lower compound. Also, saving that width and 1/2" may make for a lighter setup.
If you are planning to road race/HPDE as well, you might want to go with a 9" wheel.
What's your driving experience level?
