Default winter tires?

Hi all, I am looking for tires for the other seasons besides summer. I currently run star specs for the summer months. I picked up a cheap set of wheels and plan to use them with all-season tires for fall and winter. Any suggestions? I am looking for a low price, high treadwear, good wet/snow/ice traction, but not a flat out snow tire. Wheels are 17x7 and 17x8. I live in Charlotte, NC so we don't see snow very often. Thanks.

I run Star Specs during the summer also.
My cold weather tires are Continental Extreme Contact DWS.
I run about 36psi in them and they feel more responsive and I've never had an issue with flat spots.
Grip is obviously less than the Star Specs, but, good for an all-season tire.

Summer tires are pretty much 3-season (11-month, even?) tires in Charlotte.

Conti ExtremeContact DWS looks like your best bet if you don't want dedicated winter tires. Check out Tire Rack survey results:

For an all season tire the DWS is the best that we have tested. If you go with a winter tire I would look at a tire like the Dunlop Winter Sport ot the Bridgestone Blizzak LM60. These tires are still good handling tires in the dry bu much better in ice and snow.
If I can help let me know.
