Default F: 225/45 R: 245/40 ?

This is the first time im changing tires on my S, and i just realized im running 225/45 on the front and 245/40 on the rears.
Is this a bad idea? Ive just ordered some michellin PS3's for my front, and running my shitty conti CS3 (which i hate) on the rear but i dont really have the cash to change all 4 and only the front need changing.

Any advice for this scenario?

Without knowing the rest of your setup. Cannot determine how "bad". But on mostly stock setup (suspension n sway bar ect.) that is not a good stagger combo. May be more prone to snap oversteer or spin out. F215/45 R 17 matches w R245/40 R 17. Other gurus here may be able to give more insight.

A few crash threads I came across here were due to spin out w bad rear tires.

I had those tire sizes on my last wheel setup and the setup was very solid and responsive, although it might have just been my driving style. but boy if it lets go... it's more violent than the first 15 min of saving private ryan.

IMO it's as much an issue with aesthetics as performance (in my experience, changes in tire stagger within reason don't really change the balance of the car or its handling characteristics, particularly on the street). 225/45-17 are larger in diameter than 245/40-17, and also the 225s will pooch out a bit more on 7.5" front wheels than 245s on the 8.5" rears. Combined effect is that the front tires look beefier than the rears.
I'd go with either:
215/45-17 fronts with 245/40-17 rears (OEM)
or
215/45-17 fronts with 255/40-17 rears (OEM CR)
or
225/45-17 fronts with 255/40-17 rears

Sounds like you've already ordered front tires?

I did not know the OEM CR setup was 215/255.

I am contemplating on new rears. Can anyone else confirm that tire setup is as good or better than 215/245?

I was running the 225/45R17 in the front and the 245/40R17 on the rear for a short period of time. I had run over a large nail that was in a non repairable zone. I picked up the two fronts from a nice local member here on s2ki and ran that size until I could afford to replace them all. While these tire sizes are not ideal, it was not as bad as some might lead you to believe. In my opinion, you might want to take it easy with your driving just to be safe since oversteer will be more of an issue, but at the same time, you don't have to drive like a 95 yr old driving a versa. If you must drive on it for a while then just be cautious. Then replace the rears with a more friendly size for your setup.

With regards to a 215/245 setup vs a 225/255 setup, I personally prefer the 215/245 setup for the street. On the track I would prefer the 225/255 setup with a race alignment though. When I replaced my tires last spring I was trying to make the same decision, but ended up with just going stock sizes since I won't be going to the track to drive for a couple years. Good luck man.

I wouldn't worry about 225/245, its one of the most common staggers. I would make sure the tires front vs rear have similar UTGQ rating or at least in the same category.

You dont reckon? Ive just been told they didnt bring 215's or 255's in to the country for that tyre... so either i go odd sizes or find me a new bit of rubber to fit. hmm...
