Beater - what the hell is the matter with me?
So, I'm contemplating getting rid of my latest beater...which I've had for like 2 months. It's ridiculous, I know.
It's a 2002 SVT Focus - which I really like. Lots of fun, easy to park, and plenty of cargo room. But here are my reasons for (thinking of) getting rid of it.
1) A friend of mine wants it.
2) My friend will pay me what I paid for it.
3) Uses premium gas (and mpg isn't great in the city)
4) Even though I got a hell of a deal on it, since I'm doing liability only for insurance, I should really have a more "disposable" car (value less than $3k).
5) With the money, I could get a civic and a motorcycle or just get a civic and some cash.
So like last time I'm looking at civics, CRV's and Subaru's (saw a high mileage impreza 2.5 rs). No more integras for me (last one was stolen).
Why can't I just find something I like and stick with it!?! (I guess that's what the s2000 is for...the only reason I had 2 is because the CR fits what I do better and there won't ever be a better one).

I have never understood the whole beater concept.2. The city of Chicago has a higher population than the state of TN in an area about 1/1000th of the size. LOTS of idiots who can't drive/park, etc. It makes for LOTS of opertunities for dents, dings, scratches, theft, etc, etc.
Beater/DD is somewhat of a necessity when you have an S and have to deal with snow.
I don't know what to say, Pat. I personally would avoid the Civic route, since those tend to be stolen as well, though not as desirable as the Integra's. In regards to premium vs regular, I can't see it costing more than $2.00 more per fillup, so over a year it will only add up to a $100 or so.
Perhaps you should do some test drives of the other cars you are looking at, you may find the Focus is better.

1)They don't suck to drive (35+ mpg and 4 wheel double wishbone)
2)I know how to work on Honda's
3)If I blow an engine, I can get a another d-series for like $250
4)disposable (ie, if I total it then I'm only out $2k not $4500 like with the Focus).
Are civics stolen as much? I figure if I avoid civic si's or b-series engines, than I should be safe.
I should probably just keep the Focus, but my friend is already getting excited about it and I'm kinda getting excited about having a cheap car.
Take a serious look at Celica's.
They arnt targeted really at all for thefts, they are comfortable, have luxury to them, drive amazing in the snow, and are great on gas.
Plus, Toyotas are easy to work on.
My favorite is the 5th gen, you can get a mint one for about 1500, depending on where you look.
