Better car to take on long distance trip?
I'm trying to weigh the advantages/disadvantages of driving one of two cars down to Houston and back in December. I haven't (and don't really intend to) drive my S in snow. The S will definitely be alot more fun once I reach nice weather. The A4 is a little more comfortable for a really long drive. It wouldn't be fun if I drove the S and got caught in some snow storm on the way down there or especially on the way back. My A4 isn't all that great on its summer rubber in the snow either and I always change over to winter wheels/tires at Thanksgiving. On the other hand, I could melt those same winter tires in the Houston heat. No choice really seems better than the rest to me right now. Let's see what you guys think.
I voted to fly.
Illinois, Missouri, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Texas is about the most monotonous driving you can do in this country. Is there anything to see? Eh, not really.
If you do drive, I'd take the A4 with summer tires. In all likelihood, from Central Illinois down to about Tulsa/Little Rock will be fairly dry and above freezing; south of that will be warm enough where it would rain regardless. There's some chance of snow and freezing rain along the way, but not that much. The only way I'd consider driving is if you could stop along the way a few places, or maybe side trip to New Orleans or something.

Although, I would go with the snowies on the A4, better safe than sorry.
i agree w/WSB's post. as long as it's not snowing in chicago you'll be fine on summer tires.
i drove r/t IL to austin, tx a few years ago with friends, which was a pretty fun drive. when i bought my S, i flew to dallas and drove it back to chicago...which was no problem. however, there really isn't anything to see except for some different colored dirt in GA.
if you're going with friends, driving wouldn't be bad...road trips can be a great time in the car. otherwise, fly!
