Earlier today, I visited my old boss, and it sounds like they are pushing to create a new position and "specifically have me in mind". I should know by mid-March at the latest if they truly are going to create it. It would mean no major changes in location, and I would be full-time working with people I already know and like, with potential to network like crazy.
