Wet shaving
I had to start shaving at a very early age. That's why I'm amazed that I'm now bald.
At age 11 I was sent home from parochial school to shave and my mom was told that I should not show up at school with a shadow over my upper lip. So, I got my first razor for free.
In 1954, when I started shaving, Gilette came out with their first twist open razor and also the first stainless steel razor called the Aristocrat. So, you no longer had to disassemble the razor to change blades and you no longer had to tolerate a rusty razor holder. Cool.
I still have that razor as is shown in the photo below but I only use it for trimming my sideburns.
If, like me, you have tender skin and a beard tougher than wire, shaving was an excruciating and bloody experience. When the first cartridge blade razors were introduced in the '90s, I thought that it was a god-send. I think that the one that I now use on my semi-white beard has five blades in the cartridge.
Don't you think that my soap mug is cool?

I do it before I get in the shower. I've been wanting to try a straight razor for more defined lines. I haven't because I don't know if that can be achieved with one. I just see myself in the ER with my lip in a baggie...
Thought i would bump this thread since my xmas gift relates to this.
All those questions were good. As I always wondered what other gents grooming styles.
I got the Art of Shaving New York set!!!!! It comes with the pre-shave oils, shaving cream, brush, and after shave!!
Although I haven't used it yet I did try their sample of lavender and loved it!
I want to get the old school straight blade with a porcelain handle.
I do fear slitting my throat so who knows if I'll get one.
I prefer razors and are as followed Gillette Mach3, Turbo, Fuzion, then Glide (Never used electric cuz it never appealed to me.)
My process before was shave with Gillette brand gel for sensitive skin and use Gillette brand sensitive skin aftershave . I would shave against the grain.
I currently shave with Every Man Jack shaving cream and Every Man Jack aftershave, after it was featured in a GQ mag stating its for sensitive skin with no harsh chemicals.(It can be purchased at Target for under $5.) I shave with the grain and follow against grain for a smoother shave.
Just recently I started shaving after shower ONLY if I have time to spare as I notice I this just takes longer.

easy life that is a great gift! I actually started with the AOS starter set and loved the lavender as well. Since that time i have acquired additional brushes, razors, more blades than i can count. Many soaps/creams etc etc.
i have recently gotten into straight razors as well. whippeddog.com is a good resource to get you started for cheap.
I will say that i am completely comfortable with the safety razor, and that my first time with the Straight was very nerve wrecking. i am now pretty smooth with the straight and have no problems using both hands as applicable.
ENJOY!
