Wicker Park Area.
I live in Lincoln Park and my car got broken into there. That's a fun neighborhood that's getting better and better.
The Real World Chicago was filmed right down the street on North ave from the double door.

yeah i guess a car parked outside isn't completely safe anywhere (which is why i got a garage). lincoln park is pretty good...my choices before i found my current place were lincoln park, wrigleyville, and old town.
as far as overall crime goes, the chicago police has a website where you can view crimes committed w/in a certain area...i'll edit and post the link when i get a chance to find it. it's like citizen's iCam or something.

ex Wicker Park resident as well.. i was on North/Western (almost Humbolt Park!#$@$ ).
the neighborhood has no color except for D'vine on the weekends. it's lively as hell, gentrified as isht can be and full of hipsters/vegans. there are plenty of decent restaurants, shopping is great, bar scene is insane, ditto to music venues.
300K for 2br/2ba would be considered a relative bargain right now in the area tho we are, of course, in a downtrend. if you go 2 blocks WEST into Humboldt, you'd be able to find an entire gut rehabbed 2 floor flat for < $300K

Nice, i figure it will be a year or so till i will be in he market to move, ill definately keep in mind the crime situation. I got off at the stoney island exit by accident when i first drove in, and i took an instant left..i dont remember the streets names, but it looked like a very rough area, and there were lots of people walkin the streets.
it seems like everyone always wants to move to wicker park when they first move into the city. i don't mean just the people here...but even my friends and a lot of other people i've talked to. why is that? even i did it.
i think it's pretty crappy for nightlife. it's too isolated if you're the type that walks or uses public transportation. or if you don't like paying for cabs any time you wanna go anywhere.
half the bars are okay (moonshine is one) and half are filled w/"hipsters". the only club there is IV...which can be pretty fun, but not every weekend. the blue line takes you...nowhere. screw that.
