Default Speed Freaks Group Buy: GiroDisc 2-Pc OEM Replacement Rotors

To kick off Speed-Freaks new sponsorship with S2ki, we are presenting three group buy options that address some of the shortcomings of the S2000 stock braking system. With the help of GiroDisc and WASP Composites we are able to offer brake packages that will greatly improve the consistency and reliability of your brakes. The packages revolve around the newly redesigned GiroDisc two-piece rotors for the front axle of the S2000. The rotors can be combined with the WASP Composites brake cooling kit and/or pads of your choice to make your braking system truly tack worthy, while also significantly reducing your consumables cost.

Key Features and Benefits:

• Matches OE Rotor Diameter of ~299.7-299.9mm, Thickness of 25mm
• Rotors weigh 1.5 lbs less than the OEM rotors (13.0 compared to 14.5).
• The rings are made from a proprietary high carbon content cast iron.
• Rings use a curved vane design that is much more effective at cooling the rotor than the straight vane design used in OEM single piece rotors.
• Fully floating design which utilizes 10 high strength alloy steel drive pins
• The rotor and hat are cadmium plated for a long lasting corrosion resistance.
• The pins are mounted with anti-noise spring washers, which allow the rotor to grow with heat expansion but eliminate the rattle and noise associated with floating rotors.
• Fully floating design allows the rotor to self-center between the pads leading to more even pad wear.
• Once the GiroDisc system is in place, simply replace the cast iron rotor ring when needed, our replacement rotor rings come with all new hardware.
• Speed Freaks, LLC offers a free rebuild service via GiroDisc with the purchase of new rotor rings, simply send in your hats and GiroDisc will inspect them to make sure they are still within all tolerances, assemble the new rotor rings for you, and turn the entire assembly to ensure they are within specifications for run-out.
• When used with performance pads and hi-temp fluid, you have what amounts to a truly amazing solution to overheating or warping rotors.

Why GiroDisc?

GiroDisc is a braking technology company dedicated to developing quality, high performance, braking components and solutions.

GiroDisc is guided under the direction of Principal Martin Meade, who spent five years as an Engineer with Porsche Engineering Services, where he played a role in developing Porsche technology. Martin began his engineering career working in the Aerospace industry, developing tools and components for special projects. Before working with Porsche, Martin learned a great deal about vehicle design and technologies by working with several vehicle design and development firms. Martin has developed a critical eye and will not accept anything but the best quality.

Martin has enlisted help from key sources such as a former road testing engineer and Design Engineer for AP Racing in the UK and another individual from Brembo North America in the high performance division. With lessons learned at AP Racing and Brembo, and experience in prototype and racing car design, these individuals have developed a broad spectrum of engineering capabilities in the world of high performance automobiles, and specifically the technologies for developing braking systems.

GiroDisc designs and engineers replacement discs after documenting and studying the OEM brake system, specifically the disc design. After analyzing the data and determining how best to maximize the benefit of the new disc, the design process is carried out using 3D CAD-CAE (Computer aided drafting, Computer aided engineering). Prototypes are constructed and tested with a vehicle. When the GiroDisc team is satisfied that the disc will meet the goals established for the vehicle, it is produced in limited quantities and released for sale.

GiroDisc’s mission is to put lessons learned and the latest technologies together to develop the highest performance braking systems for your project, racing car, or road car.

GiroDisc rotor construction:

The primary purpose of the GiroDisc system is to reduce unsprung and overall vehicle weight. The secondary purpose is to increase ventilation and cooling capacity of the brake disc while retaining it's original dimensions. This is accomplished by using two-piece disc construction. The central “hat” section of the disc is made from 6061-T6 aircraft specification aluminum.
The disc is made from cast iron, to the same specification and material as used by professional racing organizations. It is a curved vane design, developed in racing to act as a centrifugal pump to force cool air through the disc. The rotor and hat have a floating mount system, which utilizes high strength alloy steel drive pins, manufactured by Girodisc to their own specifications and cadmium plated for a long lasting corrosion resistance. These pins take the load from braking actions while maintaining the axial and radial float between the hat and disc. The pins are secured by grade 12 cap screws with hardened washers. In order to keep the rotors from making noise when cold, the pins are mounted with anti-noise spring clips on the rotor side, which allows the rotor to grow with heat expansion but eliminate the rattle and noise associated with floating rotors. The float also allows the rotor to self-center between the pads.

GiroDisc two-piece rotors also offer a unique look for the street or track car. All rotors are available with custom drilled and slotted rings as well as hats that can be custom anodized in several different colors for an additional charge.

WASP Composites Brake cooling kit:
(Taken from WASP Composites brake cooling test thread)
https://www.s2ki.com/s2000/topic/103...-test-results/

Brakes work by converting kinetic energy to thermal energy and Iron rotors could glow orange when surface temps pass 750F. A picture of glowing orange rotors is truly an amazing sight unless the car in the photo is yours. that excess heat can damage many components in the braking system. Too much heat causes brake fluid to boil. When this happens, pockets of air are introduced into the brake lines, causing a mushy pedal and reduced braking performance. Additionally, If the car does not slow down as much as usual for a given amount of brake pedal force, the Brake pads have faded since more volatile ingredients in the pad compound have become hot enough to emit gases that have nowhere else to go but between the pad and rotor, reducing the effective contact pressure between the two. Other penalties include warped and cracked rotors, leaking oil seals in the calipers, and glazed brake pads.

Directing air to the rotors by installing air ducts is the simplest and most efficient method for cooling your brakes. A cooler rotor also keeps the caliper cooler. you should point the end of the duct directly toward the center of the rotor. Don't make the mistake of pointing it at the caliper or the side of the rotor, as this can cause more harm than good. A brake disc is designed to be cooled OUTWARD FROM THE CENTER. When the car is rolling, the directional cooling vanes inside the rotor pull air from the center of the disc and force it out. So providing a steady stream of cool air to the center of the rotor cools the entire disc. Blowing air directly against the side of the disc only cools that side while the opposite side stays hot. The difference in temperature between one side of the rotor and the other can cause warping and cracking.

Our design REPLACES the dust shield and forces all the air to the center of the rotor by sealing the rotor eye (center). In order to protect heat sensitive parts and sensors we also designed Carbon Fiber heat shields with GOLD Reflective Heat Barrier Film for tie rod ends.

RESULT:
WASP cooling kit can reduce rotor temps by about 150-200 degrees C which can reduce and eliminate brake fade and increase rotor, pad and caliper life and save you money in the long run. Additionally, it gives the driver more confidence with braking which results in better lap times and more enjoyable driving experience. We also determined that the rotor outlet does not pass 360 degrees C and therefore more economy Thermoid Neoprene Ducting suffice for this application.

Here are additional pics of our kit and more pics coming soon.
We will be making limited quantity of this kit since it is very labor intensive. Each and every part is handmade and we pay close attention to the quality of each product.

Each kit comes with:
2 x AP2 bumper inlets (2.5")
2 x 304 stainless steel rotor outlets
10' Thermoid Neoprene Ducting- 2.5"
