all Edge bottles are red lids now.

No issues at all with the latest edge titanium stuff. Also Honda suggest 5W-40 for UK usage. Not sure the relevance of dollars or quarts in this thread !

They change it once a week though so we probably spend less on oil

Having gone through all the boutique oils and not really coming up with any definitive proof they would be of any benefit I decided to go with the Castrol Edge Titanium FST 5W40.

She's running sweet

I have used Halfords own brand for the last 8+ years across 6 different cars, engine sizes from 1.6-2.5, 4 of them turbocharged, for a total of over 100k miles. The most mileage so far being 40k in my S2000, followed by 35k in an S15 Silvia, followed by 30k in a JZX100 Chaser. Also have used it for the last 30k in my high mileage Polo GTI which is currently at 130K on the odo. Also used in my old S13 race car.

All saw hard use, including peak 130 degrees temp around the 'ring in my S15.

Never have I had any issues. Valvetrain looked perfect when I did clearances 5k ago. My S-bodies saw none of the common engine wear related issues that a lot of hard-used cars had. My daily Polo with high miles runs great on it still and I beat on it. Those engines generally don't see much past 120k.

I'd rather use something a little cheaper and change it more often. I've tried loads of different brands, the most expensive being Motul competition at £60 a pop, which ended up breaking down at high temps on Driftworks' (granted, high power) competition car and lunched the bearings. I didn't bother using it after that.

Periodically Halfords do deals for £20 4L bottles of 5W40. This is what I use, I stock up when they have offers.

I'm not saying this is what you should all use. I'm just saying don't be blinded by brand names. As long as you keep it fairly clean, topped up, warm up and cool down properly and don't run it at prolonged extreme temps, you'll do more good than using different brands IMO.
