golden eagle maped out a great run for the northern piedmont

 

I took you guys through some roads in King, NC that I will have to run again to get the miles and turn locations but basically if you get onto NC66 north in Stokes County then it goes like this...

1. NC 66 to intersection with highway 89
2. Turn right on 89 (watch carefully here to follow sign for 89)
3. Drive 89 east to Danbury
4. Turn left on highway 8 toward Stuart, VA
5. Several miles then Left on Highway 103 toward Claudeville, VA and Mount Airy, NC
6. Several miles at Claudeville you will come upon a fairly new gas sattion convenient store (named something odd like "Hop & Go")
7. Turn Right exactly at this gas station (don't remember the road name or number)
8. After a few miles another road intersects from the left, bear right here.
9. Continue to the stop sign at Ararat highway (AKA Highway 104)
10. Cross Ararat Highway onto Squirrel Spur
11. Follow Squirrel Spur to the top and take one of the crossvers onto the BR Parkway.
12. Turn Left on BRP toward Fancy Gap
13. Several miles (probabaly 10-12) turn Left at Orchard Gap
14. Go back down the mountain on Wards Gap Road. This will take you through Cana, VA into Mount Airy.
15. Go though Mount Airy until you get to US52.
16. Turn south on US52 and return to King or Winston-Salem.

Note: At step 12 you can choose to go north on BRP to visit Meadows of Dan, Mabry Mill or Chateau Morissette Winery. They are only a few miles north.

I will fine tune this if I ever get a chance to make the run again.

There are several other twisties in this particular area, some I haven't got to yet.

I am working on a couple of new drives, around the Asheboro area.

One starts back at the zoo, and has the same initial starting roads, but then goes in the opposite direction. The other starts at the western edge of Asheboro and heads off in a northwesterly direction. As soon as I have the route details completed, then I will post each one with precise mileages, turns and roads.

Turn RIGHT onto Hwy 159/Zoo Parkway

At 3.2 miles turn RIGHT onto Old Cox Rd

At 8.9 miles...reach STOP SIGN turn RIGHT onto Old NC Hwy 13

At 13.4 miles reach STOP SIGN turn RIGHT onto US 220 Alt

At 15.4 miles turn LEFT onto New Hope Ch Rd

Cross I-73/74/220 continue on New Hope Ch Rd

At 18.4 miles turn RIGHT onto Burney Rd

At 19.1 miles reach STOP SIGN...cross 134...go straight across

At 20.9 miles turn LEFT onto Pisgah Covered Bridge Rd

At 21.3 miles turn RIGHT onto Pisgah Covered Bridge Rd

[At 22.8 miles Pisgah Covered Bridge]

At 24.2 miles reach STOP SIGN at Mt Lebanon Rd...go straight ahead

At 26.9 miles reach STOP SIGN turn RIGHT onto High Pine Ch Rd

At 34.4 miles reach STOP SIGN turn RIGHT onto Hopewell Friends Rd

At 35.3 miles reach STOP SIGN turn Right onto Pisgah Covered Bridge Rd

That stretch of 221 that goes by Grandfather MTN to linville is awesome. The curves dont roll any though... It is just a flat curvy road, where the dragon curves lean in thru it. Still an awesome stretch of road that I didnt think would ever end in my 93 integra...

 

181 from Morganton (Exit 105 on I-40) to Linville is an excclent drive. I found this discovered this back route from Hickory to Boone when 321 washed out a couple of years ago. Traffic pretty much clears out as you get outside of Morganton, and then its a nice scenic drive up the mountian. The roads are fairly smooth and offer up some nice curves and a few straights. After driving this route for 6 months I never once saw a NCHP on it. 181 runs into 221 after crossing over the BRP so you can take the road on into Boone. To this day if I have time I still take this route to Boone instead of the straight shot up 321, although it takes twice as long it is a blast to drive. Also 321 is under construction right now heading up the mountian so it can be slow going, and there is always the chance of getting stuck behind a truck traveling 5mph towards the top. 181 seems to have much less commercial traffic, and less traffic overall than 321. So if you're going to Boone from the via passing through Hickory and have some extra time try this route.

 

Anyone know how to hack Google Maps?

It would _really_ be cool to type in a area code or just scroll around the map and see drives highlighted.

Or, if Google Earth was used, you could "fly" over the drive before you went!
