hardly comparable to an S2000 either
Granted the Wankel engine is unique and doesn't bear comparison but I think the RX-8 vs the S2000 is a valid comparison, if nothing else on looks alone. It has been documented on here many times how the two have been confused at a distance.
The driving characteristics are not dissimilar too. Both cars have to be worked hard to get the best out of them to the detriment of fuel consumption.
Performance seems fairly comparable too.
I think family man CiderBoy is going to be happy with his purchase once the damage done by the 'silly bint' is sorted.
Like the S2000 the RX-8 is 'different' and that is what appeals to a lot of us on here. We are not sheep.

Just don't get it why in UK Car Talk people are so touchy about comparing one car with another.

it's just that some comparisons are more pointless than others
and comparing four door, four seat saloons, with two door, two seat convertibles, is pretty far along the scale
whilst it's inevitable that people make some comparisons between their new and old cars
there's not a lot of point unless the cars occupy the same sector

I guess you paid about £7K, which limits your downside well enough
I am a bit paranoid to be honest!
But as you say, any potential downside had its limits.

not comparable in any way to an Elise
That car was immense!

It was less of a comparison and more a few more tears being shed over the long lost Elise.
It's hard to avoid thinking about your old car (good or bad) when you replace it

Have just sat a read this thread start to finish - really interesting stuff on a subject I can relate to. I have considered a REX on more than one occasion but haven't the need (yet) to get a 4 seater.
I'd love to see pics Nick to see what you got for your money
Hope it's all going well.

It's gone!
I've never had a car that I wanted shot of so badly.
The costs:
- Purchased Dec 2009 £6,400
- Px value May 2011 £2,800 (loads of bad RX8 out there have hit residual value badly)
- No bills otho than running costs in the 12k I put on it, until a CAT damaged by flooding meant it failed the MOT and need a new one
The good points:
- It was a cheap purchase
- It was comfortable
- The handling. The car is well balanced.
The bad points:
- It was dull
- The MPG was pathetic. 15mpg would be fine if I was showing a clean pair of heels to most machines, but the RX8 is not that quick
- The engine. Novelty at first - the turbine wine. But the Wankels are a pain in the arse, prone to flooding (3 times in a year for me) and the rotor tips wear meaning new engine time (mine needed one!)
- The depreciation. £3,600 in a year is nothing to be worried about but I was expecting a better return and had purchased well at time of purchase. The bad points above have really started to hit residuals.
Anyway, it's gone and I've got something new.
And as much as I am happy with the new ride, getting rid of the Mazda heap makes me equally as happy.

Hey Nick
I guess these cars can seem very tempting to some folk at current prices but you normally get what you pay for in life and this seems like another example.
Mate of mine owned aDatsun Nissan Z and loved it. I thought it sounded much better than the S. Enjoy
