So yesterday I actually found the time to go and drive one.

I liked it!

It was quick as I needed it to be and the engine brings with it a certain character, much like the high revving nature of the S2000 and Elise 111R.

I did not really get the chance to throw it around, but it seemed fairly pointy.

I should be making a purchase on Sunday!

I encountered one on the way to Saz's this morning. He got lucky and chose the right lane so got in front of me. Sat at a respectful distance behind him nearly all the way to Saz's. Was conscious that he was aware of me.

Naughty me. Sat on him a bit on the bypass which has an incline which tends to sort the men from the boys. I was braver than him at the roundabout.

He took one route and I another. He made Saz's close just before me. Has probably spotted me outside her house explaining why he took notice. Quite like the look of the RX-8 and think that in many ways it is comparable with the S. Always remember being very excited when an earlier incarnation spewed flames out of its exhaust when launching at a roundabout in Hertford.

Think it would be a good choice for you CiderMan.

Nick, the last one at Coombe was quite inadequate, you'll get bored.
I would buy an older Evo in your position, or a Clio/Meg.

We'll see Steve... I'll bring it to the next track day and see how it does.

There are 2 versions and I'm going for the higher power 231bhp one and not the 192bhp variant.

On the road... it will do. The handling and theatre will make up for what it lacks in out right performance.

On the track... it won't be anywhere near the Elise, but I'll tell you now that no S2000 (for example) will be showing me a clear pair of heels.

But I did not buy it for the track and ultimately we'll be acquiring a 3rd car at some point.

He won then!

I agree it's very like the S2000... the high revving nature and some of the design is very similar.

At the end of the day, it's a sports car.... unlike the Mondeo st220 and Legacy Spec B which were the other considerations.

I think you've nailed it, Nick!

It lacks the PTW ratio of the S2000, but superior aerodynamics compensate at speed. They are both cracking drives.

Most people miss the point of the RX-8 by a country mile; thought you'd like it!

Well I've got one now... so we'll see how it goes.

Ultimately I am underwhelmed coming from the Elise, but I just need to keep reminding myself the car change freed up almost £10k in cash towards our house move.

Plus points so far:
- Heated seats, comfort and an awesome Bose stereo
- Lots more attention than I was expecting
- The mrs is happy with it

Negative points so far:
- Slower than the Elise
- Less Nimble than the Elise
- The expected fear of something going pop (I always get this when I purchase a car)
- The silly bint who reversed into me at Reading services on the way home from picking it up!

not comparable in any way to an Elise

and since it has a bloody great roof on it, four doors and a Wankel

hardly comparable to an S2000 either

I'm sure it does what it says on the tin

and in its sector, it's an interesting choice

good luck with it

I guess you paid about £7K, which limits your downside well enough
