Default Stock 02 AP1 Vs 05 WRX sti

So had my first "encounter" tonight with a friendly guy in a WRX sti. Actually he followed me when I passed some cars doing 35 in a 55 (SHOOT ME!) and chased me down a few roads later. Talked for a bit and went to check out his 87 FC RX-7 turbo and talk cars. I'm new to this area and he took me down some awesome twisting backroads at what may been highly illegal speeds (late at night roads are deserted). Managed to stick to him most of the time but that AWD and his knowledge of the area ultimately left me chasing.

We came to a brand new 4 lane road they just built and decided to do a few runs. From a dead stop he had me off the line hard, caught him towards the end of first, fell behind through 2nd and stuck tight onto him threw 3rd/4th. Overall 305HP + AWD = not gonnna keep up from a stop.

Several rolling runs starting from 2nd and 3rd were MUCH closer. Starting in 2nd at about 40 I pulled ahead until the 3rd/4th shift. Starting from 3rd at 60 mph it was neck and neck past 100 and then he started to pull away. So much vtec goodness gives us an edge but in the long run its hard to make up that 60 hp and 130 lb feet or torque.

Long story short damned nice guy w/a couple of nice cars who showed me some awesome backroads!

PS....going to buy new tires, shocks, springs, wheels, clutch, and a turbo tomorrow

Yeah it was definitely a quick car! He had only had her for about a month so we were both new to our cars but having a blast. I'd imagine if he had his shifts nailed and was used to his power band he'd put a hurting on me. But man it rekindled that speed gene even more so now! Already planning out my build and pricing some power adders and suspension setups. Looking forward to going back and dusting his ass sometime

Very impressive on all parts. Those sti's are pretty potent even in stock form. Sounds like you hung in there really well.

Stock STi's don't really have anything up top. They drop power tremendously up there, however, it's extremely easy to make that up with a couple parts and a tune (especially if you go E85). I always get looks from the Subaru guys here when I tell them my S2000 will take their stock STi from a roll. The reason I upgraded my turbo on my STi is because the top end was severely lacking (at the time, my other car had a Vortech SC which came alive the higher you revved it).

The new STi's are tuned a little better and make a good bit more power than the previous years, however, once you mod them, they're still capped the same.
