Default new owner, clutch question

Hi Everyone,

I've owner a MY01 for about a month. When driving the car last night I noticed that when I push on the clutch pedal the feel is very soft until almost reaching the floor (probably not more than several inches) at which point the clutch engages normally and I can shift into all of the gears normally. No sounds from the transmission...no grinding, chirping, etc., although the car has exhibited the "clutch buzz" when shifting into 3rd and/or 4th gear. Is what I'm describing symptomatic of a clutch failure or could it be something else? I appreciate any help you guys could offer. Thanks!

Get a turkey baster. Suck as much fluid out of the clutch master cylinder as possible. Refill with new fluid. See if that helps your symptoms.

Air in the line.

Just needs a bleed. Might as well swap the fluid. Bleed it thoroughly, if it gets soft again, you have a bad seal somewhere in the system that's letting air in.

If you're lucky, it will be leaking fluid and easy to spot.

If not, it's a very simple system with very few parts, and all of them are easy to reach. Worst-case scenario is you have to throw 1 too many parts at it.

Try the solutions above. I highly doubt it's your clutch disc itself but if after the above you get the same issue then maybe it is

A 2001 is probably due for my favorite, trifecta treatment based on age and mileage alone -- this will bring clutch pedal feel (and shifter feel) better than factory new:
  1. Turkey baste the clutch reservoir, new fluid, and bleed afterwards
  2. Sand the clutch nipple and regrease everything down there @ https://www.s2ki.com/forums/s2000-un...2/#post7253853
  3. BONUS: Shifter regrease @ DIY Regrease Shifter - S2KI Honda S2000 Forums

All of the above and check your clutch master cylinder for leaking. The clutch fluid is going somewhere and it's probably just gonna happen again sooner or later.

I'm not so sure it has anything to do with your clutch fluid. Air in the line usually results in grinding gears and/or difficulty shifting. Sure, a soft clutch pedal is another symptom but other issues can cause that as well.

If you're not low on fluid it's unlikely your problem is air in your line.

Well...he's a new owner. So maybe the clutch was changed by the PO and never adjusted.

OP...go from easy to hard:

-Check/change fluid and bleed the system.

If that doesn't work:

-Adjust the freeplay in the pedal. At the "zero" point, the pedal should freely move about 1/4" before starting to disengage the clutch. Yours may have too much freeplay. Some mechanics set it this way because they feel that customers like the clutch to engage at the floorboard.

If that didn't work:

-You may have clutch issues. This will likely require dropping the trans.
