Ok I see why my pm box looked so odd, since I had deleted most everything in my in box but apparently not my sent items it looked like stuff I had already deleted.
I had like roughly 1100 sent pm's and only 49 pm's in my in box so they were pretty well buried. After deleting everything that started with sent in front of it my PM box is finally back to normal.
Now after thinking about it I probably should have created a new folder and called it sent PM's and moved them there but what's done is done
no biggie.

I have 2 quick questions. Can you guys make it like it was before where you can see when a thread was started? It's nice to know when a thread was started before going into it since a lot of people bump old threads, and people don't realize how old it is.
Second, can I not edit the title of one of my threads? Before you just click edit on your first post and you can edit your thread, now you can only edit the actual post, and don't see a way to change the actual title or subtitle.

Before you enter your post (still in forum view) mouse over your post and you'll see something faintly pop up on the right, click the first pic, it looks like and edit window.
The other way and the way to edit the subtitle is to click "Topic Moderation" at the bottom of the thread of your post and you'll see edit title in there.
All of your PMs from all of your folders, sent, received or otherwise are archived in My Conversations folder. i.e they are all in one big pile now regardless if you had them in folders before or not.
Items marked Sent: are what was in your sent folder.
What were PMs before are now archived copies that is just how it works out and there is no way to change it now.
Once I turned on the new PM system that was that, no going back which is why it was disabled until I was sure that all messages were accounted for.
Only new conversations will act like conversations.
I will add the topic start date to the topic list as before but it probably won't happen until over the weekend.
The go to first unread post thing is either old cookies (logout and see if that helps) or synchronization/rebuild of some data which hasn't been done because it would be ugly. If logout doesn't work then it will have to wait until I have time to fix many of the resync/rebuild functions to run within a normal human lifespan. I don't know when I might get to that.

We had 8 years to tune the old software as we grew and demanded more from it.
This is brand new software we have no experience with and it includes a lot more functionality we've only started to explore. All that extra weight is going to take more horsepower to move and it needs to be tuned to get the most out of.
It is no different than buying a new car which has lots of potential but somehow being shocked that your lap times have actually gotten worse the first time you take it out on the track. People have somewhat unrealistic expectations of what to expect from this out of the box. The site will be slower until we can make it faster and that takes work and time. It is already faster than it was on Tuesday and it will continue to get faster as I continue to look for bottlenecks and identify problem areas and improve them to deliver more in less time.
There isn't going to be a declaration that ok, I unclogged the pipe and everything is perfect now. It is something that needs to be chipped away one slow database query and one tight recursive loop at a time. There is a ton that can be done but I have very little experience with the code in this release (a lot has changed in 8 years) to I basically have to start from zero like a complete noob. That only serves to make the process of tuning it that much more difficult.
We went from forums 1.3.x to 3.1.x and from gallery 1.0.0 to 3.2.2 and for gallery we still have one more step to go as version 4.0.0 was released today and we will be upgrading to 4.0.1 when it comes out in the next week or two. That is a huge jump of many steps. Nothing is the same anymore.
Speed is not a configuration option I can simply switch on. All I can say is expect it to get faster over time.
