Here we go again...
I think it boils down to what you are going to use the car for. In my case, I'm a big Honda fan. That explains why we have 4 Honda's in our stable but each has a "job".
The S is for spirited drives that includes long trips. There is nothing like enjoying a nice curvy road in a real convertible roadster. Reliability is a big plus, which is why I have been so hesitent in modding it.
The Civic is the inexpesive track whore/project car. I could easily get replacement parts at the junkyard. I've also worked on making it ulitarian, such as keeping the AC and interior. This makes it a fun street driver.
The Ridgeline is the swiss army knife/daily driver. Ive done just about everything with it including towing the civic to the track, spirited drives, 4 wheeling, trips to the hardware store, and its going to be the new of baby hauler.
The 01 5spd Accord Ex coupe is my wife's the super reliable gas sipping daily driver. I was thinking about selling it in order to get a nice 4 door that could include a used RL or a TL type S. The problem is that we like getting 31mpgs on 87 octance gas.
For 20K, you could explore getting 2 cars. A super fun car and a reliable car.

Looks like the E30 M3 is kickin ass! There's one (1988) for sale in Tucson with 90k miles. He's up on EBAY and it's a very clean car! That would be a nice car to own for a while, but I'm not sure I'd DD it. If I could find an E30 M3 in decent condition for the right price, I'd scoop that up very quickly and if you get bored with it, it's still going to be worth every dime you paid for it and I bet you would definitely enjoy it more than a new Z4 35is!
Another thing I noticed in your graph is, the prices of a 2006 S2000 and GTO are the same as a Z4M, E46 M3, and E39 M5. If this is true, then you are able to get all of these cars for around 16k dollars, a lot less than what the BMWs usually go for, which means your resale points given are skewed.
Thanks Simmy!
I'm not saying that non M cars are crap, but if the option is given, I'd just go with the better car. Then again, you can pick up an E30 for dirt cheap, and another "fun" car (E46M, E86 M, S2k, etc) so you won't have to worry about door dings or other DD related wear and tear. But honestly, how cool would it be to roll around in the original, the REAL M3! I suggest you search high and low, knowing you (albeit mildly) I'm sure you'd love that car.
Sorry an E30 M is too rare and too valuable of a car to daily. It's basically an 80s s2000 coupe that you're not allowed to drive.
Graham, don't f@#k around just lease something with the new 3.0 twinscroll engine. Let them have the warranty head ache etc. If you don't lock yourself into a lease you'll just get rid of whatever it is and be sorry later.

I envy you buying another car.
But I can chime in... Ive driven the Z4M, and I loved it. I also love the power of the vette..
One thing to note on your chart is the mod factor. I feel like once you start modding a car, you will always want to mod them.. I came from a camry where I changed alot of things... and bought an s2k thinking, ill just keep it stock. Not even a year later and my S is definitely not stock anymore..
I also like the idea of having 2 cars to purchase with 20k. That makes life even more exciting.

I might know of a '03 E46 M3 Alpine white for sale. Has lots of nice little mods (Stoptech BBK, suspension, and the BMW 19's).
This weekend has got me into thinking about getting a new car as well...been doing a lot of stop and go grid driving with the AC on, and its made me hate my car!

Vito, I would buy your car in a HEARTBEAT if I could find reasonable financing for it, but I just haven't found a bank to take on a ten year old car for an acceptable rate.
what year Z06? I've never been a Corvette fan, but if I could find a C6 Z06 for under 20k i would consider it.
haha true, but that is why im trying this decision maker thing, because hopefully it helps me figure out which one im emotionally attached to has at least a few points of logic attached to it!
i keep hearing this over and over, and im starting to believe it myself, but we will see...
Does Brett have that Habanero red Si w/turbo? That would be interesting to do a ridealong in...

LOL at trying to create logic out of buying a car. If one was to buy a car using logic you would buy a Civic or similar every time since it would combine the best blend of safety, dependability and low cost to own. Buying a new car when you already have reasonable transportation is a strictly emotional decision. Get the one you love the most.
But my vote would be to get another S2000! I'm also a perennial car buyer and out of the dozens of vehicles I've had over the years, the S is the one I keep coming back to. I'm on my third now and won't be getting rid of this one ever!

I've definitely considered the two car thing, but I think i would want to buy a house before doing that
