PHX guys, help.
Hey guys, I'm moving to Phoenix in the summer, and I've been digging for a decent apartment complex where I might not get my car jacked with. Anyone have a referral for me? Thanks.
What part of Phoenix will you be working in? How much are you willing to spend per month? These are are important things to consider when offering advice on living quarters.
That aside, welcome to Phoenix in advance! Have you "enjoyed" our summers before?

Make sure you get a garage. S2k's in Phx parked outside will eventually have their top slashed and seats/cluster/whatever else is worth money stolen. It's not a matter of if, but when.
That being said, Welcome!
What part of town are you looking at?

Not sure about work yet, the wife will be going to ATSU, but I'm not sure about Mesa. I've visited a few times. I was thinking like 700 a month, a little more with a garage. I liked Tempe, but you don't really know until you live somewhere so I thought I'd ask people who know. My top has already been slashed here, so the idea isn't new to me..thanks for the welcome guys.
TEMPE is bleh. Sorry...
Trillium is a pretty good apartment complex, my gf lives at the one on Pinnacle Peak, she's in a one bedroom and it's about 700 a month + 100 more for a garage.
Also, they have a deal going on right now that's like $100 move in + 3 months rent free.

If you want to be where the action is, Tempe is the place to be. Tempe marketplace, ASU, Mill Ave, Scottsdale only a few mins away, etc..Also, assuming you and/or the wife going be in Mesa on a daily basis, id stay away from the west valley. Getting from the westside over to Mesa in the AM is going to be a gigantic PITA.
Tempe is where its at if you are a single/semi-regular college student. Living there with a wife and no reason to go to school, is going to give you a headache fast. It is a pretend college town that starts to show its true grit when you leave the immediate vicinity of ASU main's campus. Mesa is bleh, and may have a higher probability of "chance" encounters with auto theft and other crimes. This should be given consideration because it is a suburb, and thus a part of the general phoenix area.

This is a map of the warzone that is central phoenix. http://www.phoenix.gov/police/ucr2009violentcrimes.pdf But, in its defense, Phoenix is a major city, and crime, from violent to property, is somewhat expected. DO NOT, on ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, live on or around Bethany Home Rd, Camelback Rd, Indian School Rd, Thomas Rd, or McDowell Rd WEST of Central Ave, until at least the 101 highway. This should be evident by the map, but if it is not, then carry a weapon, and remember, a dead man has no "side" of the story and thus its your word versus the circumstances. Beyond a reasonable doubt is all you need to have to defeat the State.
Back on topic, I would recommend North Phoenix, Peoria, Cave Creek, North Scottsdale, the Tatem area. You, your wife, and the S will be safest North of the valley. There are pockets of safe places, Chandler is safe in a lot of places, but your $700 budget for an apartment w/ a garage is going to hinder your location. Trllium is nice, like S2KHUU mentioned. I have a friend that lives there, and it is a nice place to live, close to the freeway, and close to a decent shopping plaza (Bestbuy, Walmart, Movie-Theatre, etc...) It is located at the north of the above mentioned map for reference.
Good Luck on apartment hunting, and a future welcome to AZ and the East or West side S2ki meets
