engine support. Keeps the engine from bouncing back and forth. Notorious in front wheel drive cars. Suppose to make for easier shifting as well

Wikipedia

"If torsional vibration is not controlled in a crankshaft it can cause failure of the crankshaft or any accessories that are being driven by the crankshaft (typically at the front of the engine, the inertia of the flywheel normally reduces the motion at the rear of the engine).

This potentially damaging vibration is often controlled by a torsional damper that is located at the front nose of the crankshaft (in automobiles it is often integrated into the front pulley). There are two main types of torsional dampers."

thanks!

what are some good torque dampers?

what got me interested in these was a j's kit i saw on evasive's website when i was looking for the t1r stb+x-brace.

i heard they're all about the same but i was thinking about getting that kit and selling the j's stb and using that money to get the t1r stb+x-brace that i wanted because i know someone who wants that torque damper and heat shield if i didn't want it.

Save your money... they dont do anything real. Its just a placebo effect. The idea is that the motor cant move on the engine mounts (which are designed to allow movement so all the forced arent sent directly through the chassis).

In FWD cars, the linkage between the shiter and the transmission is via cables so when the engine torques, it can create some slop (very little, but slop nonetheless). In those cars, the engine movement is less pronounced so it can help shifter feel.

In our cars, however, the shifter sticks directly into the forks in the tranny... this means the torque damper has ZERO EFFECT WHATSOEVER on shifter feel in an S2000.

So, I repeat: save your money.
