It's not bad if he hasn't changed the fluids. Unless the diff or transmission is busted contanaments don't flow through it since they are sealed. It's just good practice to change it if you track the car as the consistent amount of heat breaks down the oil over time.

Not just the heat, but the gears meshing will shear down the oil. Recommended change interval is 30k, but most people seem to change them around 10k-15k.

Could it be linked to a problem w/ the LSD? I have noticed a kind of "grinding" sound a few times, similar to the grinding you hear when you miss a gear. It's only been when turning a corner out of a complete stop, and giving it a semi-healthy amount of throttle.

Again, it's not a constant thing, but it's definitely happened more than a couple of times (and I can't feature it being a "good" thing).
Interesting suggestion about the LSD... The grinding sound could be semi-normal as I hear it from time to time even after having gearsets 1-4 replaced (but thats abnother topid since I was having synchro issues and too often grinding in gears 1-3)
Wouldn't worry so much about it.
I would recommend a tranny and diff change. There are some good DIY instructions on the forums although it's pretty basic.

Andrey is right, most people do it every 10-15k miles, I know I do.
As Bobby said too, it's good practice if you run the car hard.

Thanks Andy. My lack of knowledge for routine maintenance is obviously shining through here. When search is back up and running I'll look up some DIY post. From what I saw in the service manual, it appears to b pretty straight forward.

Yep, hardest part is getting the new fluid pumped up into the fill hole!
