I'm selling the ute. We have another practical car now so it is not really needed. I placed the ad on Carsguide last night:

Today I got an SMS asking if I still had the vehicle and could I reply via email. I did. He then asked me what is the lowest price I would take for the car. That always pisses me off. The way it works is you post a price and then people make offers and you go from there. Anyway, I asked him to make an offer. He comes back with an offer of the full asking price. He then explains he is from the UK but out of the country but would be handling the exportation to England. The car is a present for his wife!

If you really want to impress your wife I don't suggest buying her a clapped out ute.

I'm pretty sure this is scam but can't work out his angle. He has asked for my home address so I guess it could be some identity theft scam or maybe he is looking to jack my Paypal account. Any ideas.

 

Nobody in their right mind would bother shipping a 1994 Falcon all the way to the UK. I wouldn't bother.

Could be fake escrow. He pays your money into a "3rd party escrow" who then can't release your money to you until you pay some fee.

 

Identity theft scam, very common in Europe.

 

Aus, why don't you get his name, contact and address on the pretext of getting him the best shipping quote and see what you come up with?

 

I had this same issue with a buyer of my motor bike a while back. Only difference that this took place on eBay and once I reported it to they're attention he never contacted me again.

Striking similartiew between the two situations. I say don't bother with him for the hassle and wait for a local buyer to avoid complications

Oh I won't bother. It's obviously a scam. I was just curious how it works.

 

Tell him you brother works for Interpol, is based in the UK and can help with the shipping and payment.

What normally happens is they fake full payment to you with additional money for the freight.

They get you to pay someone the freight component locally. You then find the original payment for the car and freight reversed, and you have paid the freight from your own funds.

 

Looks like the ute is sold. I'll miss it.

 

Ute went today. First guy who saw it made an offer and I accepted. Then his bank decided to stuff us around for two weeks putting the money in somebody else's account. It's amazing how quick they can make a mistake but how long it takes them to rectify it. Money came through today and he picked up today. All in all a smoothish and easy transaction and only one incidence of attempted identity theft.
