Default Texas Hold'em Poker

Anyone play this game? I think I have a fair jist of the odds of chasing down certain hands but for the hell of me I can't read players that well. They say to look at tell-tale signs of breathing heavily, shaking hands, looking disinterested, etc. but I can't tell one way or another. I only play with friends as well so you'd think I'd know by now but I can only predict their usual playing style based on the table cards and their betting and not by any physical giveaways. Any poker sharks got tips?

And does anyone play low cards like 3 and 4 offsuited/suited (hoping for a straight or flush etc. ) or is that just noob mistake?

1/ dont play every game at the start of the game, if they are crap just fold. A lot of people make the mistake of betting every hand and waiting to see the flop even on crap cards and before you know what is what you have lost half your chips and bled yourself off. Wait until you have two good cards dealt. Dont waste chips at the start by waiting to see the flop with shit cards until you have won enough chips to cover you. If you are playing with 10 players at the start of the game there are heaps of players and unless you have something really good the chances are out of 10 ppl that a few ppl will have something decent. Some of the other guys will play every hand and bleed their chips off, if you play conservatively and only on good hands with your more or less untouched cache of chips you can come in with the punch at the end.

2/ maintain the same bet as everyone else when you have something good, raise it a little bit to encourage the others to tip in some more cash. You keep raising a bit then raise it heaps and hopefully some of the other guys will fold. The idea is to get as much into the pot as you can for you to win, dont go in like a raging bull and put in a huge raise quick. You can use small raises as little 'feeler' bets. Watch to see if any

3/ Bleed off some of the other players with less chips by raising an amount you know will make them think twice and hesitate. Any sort of hesitation means they are either bluffing or have fairly average cards.

4/ dont bet too eagerly or jumpy when you have a good hand. Others will pick up on this and when you dont do this they will know you have nothing.

5/ forget the 3's and 4's at the start of the game unless you have a pair, just fold otherwise you will be just handing off your chips to someone else for free. Later on in the game you can bet minimum until you see the first 3 card flop. If you dont have anything after that then just fold, no point chucking in extra chips and trying to muscle other guys out and u get called and you get whipped.

6/ if you manage to win a few decent pots and hold the most chips, play conservatively. Fold the crap hands and when you get something good bet same as everyone else and muscle guys out at the end with a large raise.

7/ When you fold or win on a bluff, never reveal your cards, even if you had top cards. you want to retain the suspense where the other players do not know where you are coming from.

8/ Look at your cards once and try to remember what you have. try not to keep looking at them over and over.

9/ Dont giveaway what you have by smiling when you have good cards and having a dissapointed face when you have something shit. Just maintain the same frozen face the whole time. Use direct eye contact with opposing players to intimidate.

10/ Maybe do some reading on body language and expressions. Its mostly stuff that you already know but refamiliarise yourself with it. A lot of them are microexpressions which you can pick up such as rapid eye movement, twitches, eyebrow movements, looking down, crossing arms etc.

Google poker strategy. There's heaps on it.

And, watch as much as you can on TV, and play as much as you can with friends- particularly those with experience. It's the best way to learn.

pray hard!!!!!!!!

it's all about luck sometimes.

I had pocket aces with all in against 9 & 10 but the other was the chip leader who can call me anytime hence he called me and won the hand with straight!!!!!!!

I'm not really that good at poker myself. I've picked up the odd scalp here and there - one of my mates holds weekly poker comps on thursday nites. it's good fun but yes seems to be just about the cash. We normally play with around 10 ppl and tip in between 50-100 each, so the winnings can be anything from 500-1000. Not a bad pickup if you can manage to win it!!!

true about the luck side, you can get whipped with a really good hand by an even better hand. the worst is when you get a hand and fold it, only to see later on in the flop that it would have won the round!

If guys are interested in playing we could perhaps hold some beginner comps, have 2x games where you just tip in $25 each game. With 10 ppl if you win you pick up $250, still not a bad return off $25 and if you lose well $25 aint much and you can try and recoup it on the next game. If your fairly average at poker after a few games you should pick up some tricks.

Good tips japcab. I googled some articels online as per FD's advice and everything seems to be about playing tightly and not going in at all unless you have something like a high pocket pair or A, K, Q etc and suited. But the number of times I see the flop or turn card go my way with what could have been a killer hand I just want to punch my nuts. Sometimes I'm holding a 4 and 5 or 6 and 8. And if other players play the conservative way and the flop turns out be something like 3, 4, 6 etc. wouldn't you have an advantage over the other players who would have only gone in with picture cards? Any hands which seem good but are actually quite crappy or any seemingly crappy hands that are actually worthwhile to hold onto until at least the flop?

I agree with most of what JAPCAP said, i used to play a lot with my friends, like every 2nd night, being impoverished uni students we only bet $5 per game...at the end of the day it's always about bragging rights as $5 is obviously not a lot.

1. Don't listen to Jezza about poker tips! hahah

2. Play sensibly, the odds are stacked against you when you play with 3, 4...even if low cards come out and you might pick up a low pocket, chances are someone is going to pick up something higher than you on the turn or the river...I would only play low cards if I get a pocket!

3. As JAPCAP said, it's very important to play 'smart' at the beginning, wait for the good cards to come to you!

4. I agree with playing conservatively when your chip leader too...

5. One thing that I believe is important, is that you should only bluff if there is only 1 or 2 other people playing in that hand, obviously the more people there are in a pot then the more chance you'll have of being caught out.

6. I find that if you are confident enough then do a bit of 'sh*t talking...an example of my favourite line would be if the flop was say 7 7 Ace and then you had say Ace 10...if you see someones hesitant just say to them something like "well if you've got the 7 then too good" haha...I find that this line usually confuses the other players a lot!!!

7. Since your always playing with your friends, try and mix up your game a bit...like if I bluff someone, I might show my cards just to annoy them, if it was an intense hand it can sometimes put them on tilt. Also it can sort of throw off people if they think that they were being able to read you.

8. Another trick I sometimes do is I pretend to not be paying attention, for example we play with timed blinds so say you get a decent set of cards, just put in the old blind amount and wait for someone to correct you...it'll usually decrease their suspicion that you have anything...

9. This other trick is really dodgy and should only be used against friends...when your big blind, you can pretend to fold, until someone reminds you that your big blind, then put your chips out and then take your cards back...you also act last so it shouldn't raise too much suspicion! LOL but obviously don't do this in a casino..

10. I find that if you play really confidently when you bluff that tends to make others believe that you actually have something, eg. calling as soon as the person before you bets or even raising a little...but the previous bluffing rule applies...

11. Lastly when your playing heads up at the end, I always try and bully my opponent with big bets, generally if you take charge they'll feel intimidated...confidence is a huge part of this game!

good luck!

p.s. watching poker on TV can help but they tend to only show the 'interesting' hands and not the other ones in between! so you don't really get a good idea of the whole game...
