Default The Italian Job

Saw it tonight. Pretty damn good.

It's a 20 year later sequel. Donald Sutherland makes an appearance at the beginning.

The car chases are not over unrealistic like most movies these days and are in the spirit of the original.

I heard that the original has some of the best car chases should I be watching it first?

What cars do they use in the new one?

The original is awesome, but it's been ages since I saw it. The original had Mini Cooper S's. The new one has Mini Cooper S's too, but the new ones!

Actually only one of them is an S. The others don't have scoops. I'm not sure why.

Being the old geezer that I am I saw the first one when it came out in 1969.
The car chases were great then but I think there have been many greater ones since (e.g. Ronin from a couple of years ago) and certainly the camera technlogy has improved.

The main part I remember was minis going up or down stairways (and amazingly not getting their suspensions ripped out).

Looking it up on the internet I see it starred Michael Caine and Noel Coward but the only actor I remember was Gene Hackman. In fact for a long time to me Gene Hackman was "the guy from The Italian Job".

The modern one also has Minis on stairways and in tunnels (something I remember from the original).

In one scene they are lightening the cars and removing unnecessary parts like the headers! They would be very noisy and I reckon you'd die of carbon monoxide poisoning in the cabin.

And I'd like to know what suspension they were running to handle like that with $9m worth of gold in the trunk.

Are you sure he was in it? What part did he play? I though that it was mainly English actors in it (with Italians in Italy). It's been a while since I've seen it.

There should be a hole heap of old farts looking at this site that can say if he was or wasn't in it. He wasn't one of the "chinless wonders" was he?

Gene Hackman will always be "the guy from the French Connection" to me.

As well as the minis the original had a Lamborghini Muira, Aston Martin DB6(?) and an E-type roadster in it.

$9M worth of gold would be about 850 - 900 Kg. If you split that between four minis that's a bit over 200Kg each. Sort of like carrying two large passengers.

Would make an awful thump in the boot as you went down the stairs.
