Default Looking for s2000

After 8 years of trying to make an MGB 1969 Mk II trying to go fast (think lots of engine rebuilds, english part suppliers etc) I have decided to move up to a real sports car.

Have narrowed down the choice to a s2000. Looking for a 2nd hand 2000/2001 low km car - a few on the market (even at this time of the year - unfortunately no black and red which is my preferred combo). Took two for a test drive today and was fantastic.

I have a few questions that I need your help with:

1. Is there any preference between a 2000 / 2001 model. Would really like a 2002 because of the glass rear window but budget doesnt stretch that far. Has anyone tried a glass window conversion in Australia?

2. Anything specific I should look for when checking out cars. I am quite knowlegeable mechanically and rebuilt the MGB motor a couple times (not that I am suggesting I will being doing this on the s2000). Are there any buyer's guides on the web?

3. I have been looking through all the dealer service bulletins. They are a great resource. Have many of you had the work talked about in the bulletins done. The bulletins that concern me are the ones that talk about having the gearbox taken out and parts replaced.

Any help and guidance would be appreciated

Hi Costa

The 2002 models have more than a rear glass window compared to older models. I think most of them have the revised clutch plate as well. Those built in late 2002 (I forgot which month though) also have the revised oil jet bolts.

I'd push the budget hard and look hard for a late 2002 if possible. Otherwise try to find a 2000/2001 with extended warranty so you can have the clutch replaced under warranty. As far as I know, there is no difference between a 2000 and 2001 model.

i think the main difference is the cd stacker- 6 compared to 8 disc. revised headunit.
try to push the budget, i think that most of the 2000 models will be selling for around 50k, so the 2002 will be up around the low 60k. i had a look on drive.com.au and there are a few listings.
i think the best bet is to go with the 2002 if u can afford it, but go with a 2001 with warranty if not.

2002+ model also has 'revised' springs and anti-roll bars.
