Does anyone have one of "know of someone" who has one? I hear Valentine 1 and Bel 980/990 are really good, but just wondering how are they in reality on the roads? Especially against laser guns.

BTW I saw Strathfield Car Radios selling them on their website!

What's that got to do with the price of fish?
Besides, I think it's only illegal to use them - not sell them.

It's different for every state. WA is fully legal, QLD you can own one but not use it ... NSW and Vic ... you better not talk about

I hear that the contables in NSW check for detectors by zapping your cockpit with the radar gun.

So noises and lights become a give away...

What if your alone in the car (this is a serious question). Is there anywhere else you can hide it they can't search?

P.S. No, I don't want the "obvious" response to that question!

If you keep your gf's handbag in the car, even if she's not there, the cops still don't have the right to search it. And btw "the obvious" place that you were thinking of is not that safe, cause they can search you on "reasonable suspicion".

Oh yeah from what I've heard, also keep a voice recorder in the car too ... and make sure you tell them that it is within your rights to record their conversation. I am not a lawyer, but I've done some reading on this

Looking strange vs walking home?

Valentine 1 locally is around 1100-1200 ... which is a tad high, considering you're getting something that you don't really know much about. This is the main reason why I am being so careful. Last Sunday after the HSCC drive (I had to leave early) was going around a nice bend in a nice two lane each way road at around 150 when a marked police car rolled out of the bend coming the other way. I almost had to make an emeregency stop at a laundromat after that!!!

So it'd be nice to have it, but to flock out 1100 bucks for one is so much.

This site went bankrupt, but has some good info:
http://www.radardetection.com.au/

This one has some info too:
http://www.australianradar.com.au/index.htm

Mind you, I would NEVER buy off them ... they sound dodgy.

You can buy Bel 980/990 at Strathfield Car Radio tho ($895)!!! (off their website)
I also have a few friends who have had different ones in the past so they know some people to get it off.

Valentine/Bel have all bands/laser-thingys covered ... I think they have an extra one that is not used in Australia ... but yeah they generally warn you about it all.
